BOXING
AMATEUR TOURNAMENT The first of a proposed series of amateur boxing contests is to be staged at His Majesty’s Theatre on Monday night, when both open and novice bouts will be held. Some of the open events are certain to be attractive, especially in the welterweight and light-weight classes. Besides local boys, several entries have come forward from Milton and Central Otago, including Artie Sutherland, amateur welterweight champion of Southland last season. Sutherland was expected to have a good chance at the New Zealand championships last September, but unfortunately he was unable to make the trip. He should assist to make these contests interesting, for at least a couple of local boys are anxious to lower his colours. An ex-West Coast champion light-weight in Ron, Wright will also be on hand, besides other well-known amateurs. With the usual smattering of new faces, the bouts should be more than usually interesting. Popular prices are to be charged, particulars of which are advertised elsewhere in this issue, MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Otago Boxing Association was held last evening, Mr F. J. Campbell presiding. The financial statement of the LowcM'Ewan title bout was presented and showed a small profit. The Southland Boxing Association wrote inquiring about a proposed interprovincial amateur contest between Otago and Southland, and it was agreed to arrange such a contest on the niglit of the Otago-South-land Rugby representative match in Dunedin. Officials were appointed for the amateur tournament on Monday night. Six new members were elected.
