PRESBYTERY OF CLUTHA

81-MONTHLY MEETING The bi-monthly meeting of the Presbytery of Clutha was held on Fridayftlast at Balclutha. There were present:—The Revs. J. J. Bates (moderator), T. Tweedie, A.M’Neur, R. Blair, A- R* Chisholm • F. M’Donald, R. N. -Alley, H. A. Mitchell, A. Morton, and H. H. Barton (ministers), Messrs T. Corry, A. B, Stewart, 0, Grey, ,J. Holland, W. I. Clarke, D, Blair, W. Carson, W. Leslie, and T. H. Russell (elders), the Rev. A. H. Wheeldon, Messrs D. W. Morgan, and J. I. Wylie, (home missionaries). The moderator welcomed _ Messrs Ashwin (home missionary supplying Stirling) and Wylie (Beaumont), ' The presbytery expressed sympathy with Mr W. Sutherland in his illness. A minute expressing .appreciation of the services of the Rev. W. F. Evans, formerly of Stirling, was approved. The Rev. J. M. Thomson wrote tendering his resignation in view of his appointment to the Tuatapere district as from July 1, It was agreed to dissolve the pastoral tie at Waiwera as from July 1, and to appoint the Rev. T. Tweedie interim moderator. The clerk (the Rev. H. H. Barton) was appointed to represent the presbytery on the Advisory Board. . , ' The Rev, R. N. Alley was appointed Presbytery correspondent to the Outlook. The following grants from the". Home Mission Committee were approved:— Beaumont. £35; South Molyneux, £ls; Clutha Valley, £25; Owaka, £10; Wai-wera-Kaihiku. £SO to July I, 1933; Waitahuna, £5. After considerable .discussion of a communication from the Home Mission Committee in regard to Gatlins, it was agreed that the still held that the ‘Gatlins parish if raised to , a church extension charge and properly staffed would soon be independent of the home mission grant. It regretted that the Home Mission Committee could; not see its way clear , to make a grant adequate for this purpose, and agreed to meet the Rev. G. Budd (Home Mission superintendent)’ on June 23 to discuss this and other matters. . , The Rev. J. J. Bates (interim-modera-tor) reported that Mr A. Ashwin had received a hearty welcome to the Stirling parish at a social held at Benhar, and had ' begun work under favourable; auspices. m, The Rev. H. H. Barton reported That Mr. J.T. Wylie had made a promising start af Beaumont., and that attention was being paid to the single men’s camp at Rae’s Junction.’ - / 1 , - The Rev. R. Blair (moderator), reported on the steps that were being taken meanwhile to supply Catlins Home Mission services, arid the hearty thanks of the presbytery were recorded to a number of voluntary helpers. ’ -' - - v ’., , . The Rev. H. A. Mitchell (convener of the Youth Committee) .reported that the Young Men’s Bible Class Canip, held in Mav at Waitahuna. with the Rev. A. R. Chisholm as . camp father, and the -Young Women’s Camp at .Greenfield, with Airs R. Waddell as camp mother, had both been highly successful. The ■ presbytery extended its heartiest thanks .and congratulations to those. in charge of these camps. . He also reported that Mrs Coatsworth had been re-elected president of the District Committee of the Yotirig Women’s Bible Class .Unibn, and that .Mr L. Dunn had been appointed to a similar position in the Young Men’s Union. The presbytery sent its greetings and best, ‘wishes to these, 'newly-elected officers. Examiners for the , Assembler Sunday school examinations were appointed ris follows:--Divisions A, B, C—the Rev. R. Blair: divisions D. E, F, G—the Rev. R. N. Alley. It was reported that the speci-ally-prepared Maori Mission lessons were used in July; arid that September was to - be: the special missionary education month. The, Rev. H.H. Barton (convener) , reported on the campaign of information and inspiration in connection' with the assembly enterprises. The parishes so far visited had the deputies' a'very encouraging reception, and''there was every reason to bone that they would do their utmost to reach the budget quotas assigned to them.’with good prospects of success. Arrangements were" made for the visiting of other centres.The Rev. A.-M‘Neiir (convener of-the Life and Work Committee) reported on the ministerial' retreat held in .Lawrence in May.- and .ontbe. approaching-.. visit of the Re*.' J. Bissett, Assembly evangelist, to Milton. • V j He reported that communications had been received from’ the' Kirlc Sessions of Tokomairiro and LdVell’s Flat, arid- in accordance therewith moved that the presbytery .i deplore * the use of intoxicating liquor at dances and socials, and the amount'of slygrog selling that went on hi the district, urge that the authorities take more active steps to keep these evils in check in this'' connection, and heartily endorse the ,-protest-, of the- Milton Unemployment- Committee. ■ .v ,’ \ * The Presbvterv adjourned to meet in Balclutha on r .Tune 2? for conference with the Rev.
