SOUTH OTAGO

BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS (From Ope Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, June 13. BOOTS FOR UNEMPLOYED. Samples of boots for the unemployed have reached Balclutha through the Central Board in Wellington. The boots are of the strong, “ trusty ” kind type, “heavy” and “heavier.” They’are manufactured in Dunedin, and appear calculated to stand a lot of hard year, They will be given out by the local certifying officer (Mr Dawson), and are available to workers for six months under the No. 5 scheme, the price being one day's work, equal to 10s in the case of married men and 7s Gd in the case of single men. Precautions are taken in the form of applications against trafficking in the boots. “ FATTENING OFF.” Last week £lO per acre was paid for an area of turnips at Paretai for fattening off purposes, and the figure quoted is as good as anything paid for Inch Clutha and Stirling turnips this season. The price, no doubt, accords ill with the £25 an acre of just a few years ago, but still in a season of slump it is looked upon as quite satisfactory. FREEZER KILLINGS. The South Otago Freezing Works report killings to the end of the week as totalling 312,813 sheep and lambs and 2937 cattle. Last season’s total was 351,790, but the season extended into July, whereas on this occasion it is understood that the season will close at the end of the present month. FOOTBALL ACCIDENTS. ’ ; The match between Clutha Seniors and Owaka, played at Owaka on Saturday, was unique, so far as South Otago is concerned, in ..the fact that five players were injured during the progress of the game and had to retire. The most serious injury Was suffered by Thomson,'of Owaka, who broke a leg just above the ankle. '' ’ . FOOTBALL LEADERS. At the conclusion of the first round of the South Otago banner competitions on Saturday Crescent (Kaitangata) was leading Toko by two points in the Senior Division, and Crescent II was one point ahead of Toko in the Second Grade. In the Third . Grade the two school, teams — South Otago High and Toko District High—are level.
