The annual meeting of the parishioners of'the Church.of England was held in the parish hall last night. The incumbent (the Rev. C. Melville Newton) occupied the chair.j expressing pleasure at the large attendance. Satisfaction was expressed at the .credit shown on the annual balance sheet, which was adopted. The incumbent’s report showed that the parish had made excellent progress during the year, the congregations having increased by 1629. The finance had also increased, and all were thanked for their support and co-operation. The joint wardens then presented a satisfactory report. The election of church officers resulted, as fol-lows:—-Vicar’s warden, Mr G. W. Thomson; people’s warden, Mr A. Morrison; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. H. Hopkins, juri.; auditor, Mr W. B. Galloway; vestrymen—Messrs G. W. Thomson, W. H. Hopkins, jun., A. Morrison, F. Lowen, E. L, A. Rolfe, J. A- Jull, J. W. Sutherland, V. R. G. Wilson, and C. C. Appleby. PALMERSTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Palmerston Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Sir W. B. Galloway), and Crs Riddle, Gordon, Warren, Thomas, Haggle, M'Gregor, Thomson, Earley, and Morrison. / Mr Duncan Dreaver wrote stating that some time ago, at. the suggestion of the Health Department, an area in the town was set aside for removal of ashes. • The writer suggested that either a rate be struck for removal in.that area, or else that ashes be removed from the whole town. —The Health Committee was instructed to bring in a report at the next meeting. The same ratepayer wrote asking that the street lamp hear Mr Galloway’s gate be removed to one pole further north.— The Works Committee to report at the next meeting. The Otago Electric Power Board wrote stating that street lighting charges l would be placedF before the board at its next meeting.—Received. In reply to a circular from the Unemployment Board iu connection with tree-planting by local bodies, it was decided to procure 2000 trees from the State Forest Service. >'■ Messrs W. Hodgetts and W. Morrison drew attention to the discharge of storm water out/ of the channel in Ronaldsay street, on to their properties.—Left in the hands of the Works Committee with power to act. It was decided to grant a donation of fl 17s 9d to the local branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association in connection with the recent Returned Soldiers’ Choir concert in the Town Hall, the total proceeds of which would be handed over to the local branch to be expended solely for relieving distress amongst unemployed returned soldiers. The Otago Hospital Board intimated that its levy for the current year would be £165 5s sd. Several applications for unemployed labour under the No. 5 scheme were referred to the Unemployment Committee. ■ The executor of the estate of the late Martin Power was granted permission to erect two water troughs on a section. The A. and P. Society’s application for soil for top-dressing the show ring was held over till next meeting. The foreman of works reported that water channels had been cleaned out on Runbrake, Stronness, Copensha,, Auskeng, and Gilligan streets. A culvert had been repaired on Copensha street, and temporary repairs had been done to the fence round the reservoir. The power grader had been employed on the highways. A stone groyne had been built at the bridge on Stronsa street. A leak in the water main from the reservoir had been repaired, New trestles were required for the pipe line in the hollow on Stronsa street. Gravel had been spread on Runbrake and Gilligan street and Clifton road. Potholes had been filled on Sandy street. The bridge on Birsa street had been redecked, and two new stringers put in. Cinders had been spread on the Recreation Ground, and a start made with the raising of the road on Runbrake street. —Received. ‘ The chairman of the Works Committee stated that the work authorised at the last meeting was in hand. He made suggestions for further work.—lt was decided to procure 50 old boiler tubes from the Railways Department for railings iu various parts of the town. Accounts amounting to £lB3 10s 7d were passed for payment. The chairman of the Water Committee said that the water meter near the cemetery had been lifted, and was in a very bad state. He quoted prices received for similar meters, and suggested that a new one be procured.—After discussion, Cr Gordon was authorised to procure a new meter. The Water Committee was empowered to remove several other meters. The chairman of the Health Committee suggested that the creek bed be raised in a certain place where stagnant water lay.—Approved. The chairman of the Reserves Committee stated that some of the borough sections had a good deal of gorse on them, and fences on several required repairing. Drainage round the hall required improving. The leak in the strong room had been repaired.—Received, The Reserves and Pictures Committees were instructed to report to the next meeting on curtain requirements for the stage in the hall.

Cr Thomas moved that the council approach the Waitaki County Council with a view to having part of the foreshore near the overbridge at Shag Point proclaimed a reserve, to be used as a picnic ground.—Carried. It was decided to approach the Railways Department with a view to having cheap fares to the nearest seaside resort issued.
