OTAGO HUNT CLUB

MEET AT “SEA VIEW.”

After over a week of wet w.eather, the Otago Hunt Club was favoured with beautiful weather for its sixth meet of the present season, which was held on Saturday afternoon at “Sea View,” Green Island, over the properties of Messrs Bowen Bros., Day, and W. Clark, to whom the thanks of the club is extended. There was again a large attendance of followers, and on account of the meet being held close to town there was a very fair attendance of spectators, who obtained a good view of practically the whole run from Mr Day’s paddock. The followers met at the Dunedin Town Hall at 2 p.m., and proceeded to “ Sea View ” by way of Caversham and Corstorphine, being joined by others on the way, and arriving about 3 p.m. The trail having been laid, the hounds were sent away about 3.15 p.m., and, picking up the scent quickly and working very well, they set the large number of followers a brisk pace. The first jump was a post-and-rail in Messrs Bowen Bros.’ property, which was well cleared by all. The trail then led through a turnip paddock in Mr Day’s property. Jumping a gorse hedge out of this paddock, the followers had a good run across paddocks to the next jump—a post-and-rail—at the back of Mr Day’s house. This jump having been negotiated by all the followers, the trail then led across country towards Green Island, where gorge hedges and post-and-rail jumps were well taken, the run finishing in Mr Clark’s property, which overlooks the sea. The going was on the soft side, but much better than was expected after such an amount of rain, and the jumping was very good indeed, especially that of several of the lady members. There were one or two falls during the run, but, fortunately, neither riders nor horses were hurt. There was a keen contest between Mrs M'Kay (on De Cruse) and Miss I. Riddle (on Tanner) for the honour of being the first lady in at the “ kill.” They cleared the last jump together, and Miss Riddle just got home by a nose, and is to be congratulated on her fine performance. Two well-known steeplechasers, viz., Umtali and Graball, who have just been put in active commission after lengthy spells, were out qualifying for hunters’ events, and both jumped exceedingly well. The run was capably controlled by the master (Mr J. E. Brunton) and deputy master (Mr R. C. Greenslade), who had just returned from a trip to Australia. Those present at the meet were:—The master (Mr J. E. Brunton), on Heather Bloom; deputy master (Mr R. C. Greenslade), 011 Mount Mavora; huntsman (F. Kydd), on Nugget; whip (D. G.
