MISSING SCIENTIST
REPORTED TO BE SAFE RELIEF PARTY RECALLED. I PEKING, June 9. (Received June 9, at 7.30 p.m.) Word has reached Sven Hedin that Dr Ambolt is now safe at Khotan. Hedin has, therefore, recalled the relief party. A previous message stated: The Swed ish explorer, Sven Hedin, aged OS, is seeking Nanking’s permission to lead a mixed Sino-foreign expedition into Sinkiang to search for Dr Nils Ambolt, a Swedish scientist, who has been missing in the wilds of Central Asia since November. Six months ago Dr Ambolt lost a caravan of 80 camels during a terrific snowstorm among the mountains in Northern Tibet and was forced to abandon the results of four years of research, in addition to a valuable collection of scientific instruments. He then proceeded on foot towards Cherchcn, an oasis 400 miles northward of Urumchi. He has not since been heard of. A recent Mohammedan rising in Sinkiang has increased the fears for his safety.
