Richardson, chairman of the Allied Brewery Traders’ Association, addressing a luncheon of the North of England section in Manchester recently, described a visit to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, when he put before Mr Neville Chamberlain the case, for a reduction in the taxation of beer. “ The experience,” Mr Richardson said, “ is somewhat reminiscent of a court martial. You state your case like a prisoner while the Chancellor seems greatly interested in the view from the window.” _ Naturally the Chancellor could not admit that the additional tax imposed 18 months ago was a mistake, but to leave on the tax another 12 months was the worst thing that could be done, not only for the trade but for the Exchequer. A resolution was passed urging the reduction of beer tax forthwith.
