Mr A. Howat Johnstone, of Auckland, is at present in Dunedin. Mr L. D. Woolf returned to Dunedin yesterday from a business visit to Christchurch. Mr C. L. Pope, station master at Dunedin, commenced his annual leave yesterday, and left by the through express for Gisborne. Mr J. Lythgoe, representative of the Australasia Electrical Company, was a passenger for Christchurch by yesterday’s through express. Mr C. A. Davidson, manager of the New Zealand Express Company’s branch at Palmerston North, left yesterday on his return north. 1 , Mr G. Crow, after a visit to Australia, returned to Dunedin fay yesterday’s second express. Mr W. Garrett returned to Dunedin last evening after a \ business visit to Auckland. " i . Mr W. E. Hughes, a director of Messrs A. 6. Kidson and Parker, Ltd., London and Glasgow, arrived in Dunedin last evening in the course of a business tour of the Dominion, and is staying at Wain’s Hotel... At the annual meeting of the Batchelor Hospital Ladies’ Guild yesterday, a motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mrs J. White, one of the original members of the guild and president for four years, was passed, the members standing in silence. Mr George Cox, of Christchurch, vicepresident of the New Zealand Football Association, arrived last night to attend the English Trophy match, Otago versus Wellington, which will be played to-day. After unbroken service on the staff of the Timaru Herald since leaving school, Mr C. E. Hassall has tendered his resignation as sub-editor, a position he has filled for about 10 years. His resignation will take effect from the beginning of August. Mr Hassall’s services'will not, however, be altogether lost th the Herald, as he will remain on the staff as a special sporting writer. Mr Louis Dapples, head of the Nestle and Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company ' in Switzerland, has recently been awarded the diploma of doctor of medicine honoris causa by the University of Lausanne on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his leadership of the company of which he is in control. Mr Dapples,-made a visit to the Dominion in 1929, when he inspected his company’s New Zealand factories, and incidentally took advantage of his visit to view at first-hand most of the principal scenic attractions of this country. The distinction just conferred upon this member of a well-known Vandois family maintains the chain of university honours which have been conferred upon Various members since the commencement of the seventeenth century.
