TAIERI RIVER TRUST

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Taieri River Trust was held yesterday, Mr 1. M. Ball presiding. DEPUTATION. Mr J. C. Cameron, Berwick, appeared before the trust in support of an application to re-lease some of_ the trusts endowments at Lake Tatawai, at present held by him—The trust discussed the matter at length, and instructed the secretary to engage a surveyor. The trust members and the settlers concerned would accompany him over the property with a view to completing the survey of the trust’s endowments at Lakes Waiporx and Tatawai. The trust also decided to offer an extension of the present lease to Mr Cameron up to two years at a fixed amount, provided he cleared 10 acres oi the land each year. REPORTS. The Works Committee reported having met on March 27 at Mr W. Bryant’s. It had inspected the river bank, where it was noticed the material was loose on account of the dry weather. The committee recommended patching the bad places meantime. Mr Bryant would supply horse and dray. Later on in the season it was recommended to, place sods in the bank, when the grass would take on better. Moynihan’s bridge had been found in very bad order. Its dimensions were 25 feet by 12 feet. The committee recommended that it bo repaired as soon as possible. Loch Katrine drain would now be easily cleaned, and it was recommended that after Marshall’s gang had finished the new cut to Bremmeii’s the work be proceeded with, Bathgate’s drain to stand till after the Lee Creek had been finished. Munro’s gang was working in the “B” drain from Lee Creek towards Maungatua. It was recommended that the box at the Lee Creek on “B ’ dram be opened and a lid put on. When the gang had finished this work (which at present was being done at an opportune time, the creek being very low), the men would shift back to Lee Creek till. Marshall’s gang had finished with Loch Katrine. The committee recommended that the clearing of broom and gorge be let to J. Sinclair at the same price as Reids tender, the clerk to prepare the necessary agreement.—After discussion, the report was adopted and the recommendations "The inspector reported on the work of the month as follows:—Lee Creek had been cleaned from the new cut to the boundary between Messrs Marshall and Ross, then from Morrison s to Momona road. Some 15 chains of the Maungatua drain had been deepened. The ends of the pipes in the borrow pit crossings at Henley had been cleaned out. Marshall s gan" had cleaned 70 chains of the new cut and" one mile of the drain from the new cut to Patrick’s pump. All the spoil in the four-foot pipe at the end of Kirks road had been removed. A leakage m the pipe in the contour channel at Cameron’s had been repaired. Six chains of gorse on the contour channel had been burnt. The protective banks had been attended to as usual. —Received. CORRESPONDENCE. The Department of Internal Affairs notified that the election of the members had been gazetted—Received. John M’Kenzie wrote regarding cleaning of Upper Lee Creek and sowing grass seed on the contour channel banks.—lt was decided to inform the writer that the n-anv now in Lee Creek would attend to the Upper Lee Creek in due course; Mr Dow to supervise the purchase of seed necessary and sowing operations. Messrs Donald Reid, Ltd., wrote regarding drain between property of Mrs J. Morrison and Mr Miller.—Works Committee to inspect. -. The district engineer, Public Works Department, wrote with respect to roads at Shand’s properties, Lee Creek.—The plan was approved, provided a width of 49 links he provided for future drainage. Messrs Sievwright, James, and Nicliol wrote regarding a ratepayer’s rates at Henley. —After discussion on the best course to pursue to collect the unpaid rates, the clerk was empowered to collect on part of the properties owned by the 1 a, rhe J Treasury, Wellington, wrote regarding interest reductions and loan conversion. —Received. ~ .. The clerk, Taieri County Council, notified that his council had accepted the terms offered by the trust for the purchase of Fulton’s Creek gravel up to the amount of 1500 yards—Received. \PPEALS AGAINST CLASSIFICATION. The trust had before them a large number of appeals against the recent classification. Fifteen appeals were received from settlers in Patrick’s block, 20 from settlers between Lee Creek and the contour channel, and 18 from other parts of the district.—The trust viewed at length all matters pertaining to the classification and appeals, and it was resolved that the magistrate be asked to adjourn the hearjnw of the appeals sine die, but not more than for six months; in the meantime the Government to be asked to rectify the error made in drafting the section. GENERAL. It was brought before the trust’s notice that a settler in Berwick district had been letting water on to his own property and then flooding neighbouring properties —The secretary was instructed to write to the offender notifying him to control the inlet box which was situated on the bank of the Waipori River.
