EX-MAYOR HONOURED

FUNCTION AT ST. KILDA At the conclusion of the meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council last night a very pleasant function was held in honour of Mr W. J. Burk, an ex-mayor and councillor of the borough, _ who is at present on a holiday visit from Petone, where he resides. In proposing the toast of their guest, the Mayor (Mr J. Beattie) said the fine position of the borough to-day was to a large extent due to the former councils, among which the one over which Mr Burk presided in 1900-08 had played no inconsiderable part. In those days St. Kilda was practically a swamp, with no proper drainage, but now it could" claim to be one of the finest boroughs in New Zealand, and Mr Burk would no doubt be very pleased to eee the advances that had been made in the past 20 years or so. The present council was fortunate in having a good body of ratepayers, who were doing their best to help them through the difficulties that beset them in these times of depression. A few remarks were also made by Mr D. C. Cameron, who expressed the regret of those present that Mrs Burk was not there, and mentioned the fact that Mr Burk was celebrating his seventyseventh birthday that day. —Applause.) Replying, Mr Burk said that lie was surprised to see the fine condition of the borough now, and he was proud to think that ho had been enabled to play his part in the improvements that had been made since the district was in its infancy. Ho was particularly impressed with the appearance of the beach and its surroundings. He always followed the progress of the St. Kilda Band with interest, ho said, and felt gratified at the success that usually attended its participation in the Dominion contests. In conclusion, on behalf of Mrs Burk and himself, he thanked those present for their welcome. — (Applause.) During the evening songs were given by Miss Helen Roy and Mr J. D. Cameron, The accompanist was Mr A. L. Burk,, town clerk of Green Island, who is a nephew of Mr W. J. Burk.
