Dragged off the parapet of the Grafton bridge early on Saturday evening by two men, a young man, aged 19, was prevented from throwing himself to death in the gully below. He appeared in the Police Court to-day and pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted suicide. Detective Sergeant M'Hugh said the accused was observed by two men to climb up on the parapet of the bridge. Both rushed to him and caught hold of him. The accused was handed over to a constable. “The father of this young man, knowing that be suffers with a weak heart, chastised him by giving him a clip on the ear for taking liquor,” said Mr M'Hugh. “He was slightly drunk, and getting the huff because of what his father had done, he attempted to jump over the Grafton bridge. He seems to be all right now and promises that he will not make the attempt again. His father will take charge of him if he is given a chance.” The accused, whose name the magistrate ordered to be suppressed, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months.
