NORTH OTAGO.

MAJESTIC THEATRE . If peril brings out the depth of love, "The Hounds of Zaroff," or "The Most Dangerous Game," showing at the Majestic Theatre to-night,-' is one of the most romantic films of the year. No pair of lovers was faced with more dread hazards than confront Joel M'Crea and Fay Wray in this eerie tale of an exiled nobleman who tires of hunting big game and turns for a thrill to tracking and killing men and women. Shipwrecked on an island, which the noble exile turned into a human game reserve, the boy and girl go through the most thrilling series of adventures the fertile minds of writers'have ever devised. The film, in fact, is based upon one of modern literature's successes, Richard Connell's prize-winning short story of the most unusual adventure conceived by man. It parallels the eerie phantasies of Edgar Allen Poe. Supporting M'Crea and Miss Wray are Leslie Banks and Robert Armstrong. . POLICE RAID The Oamaru police, under Sergeant S. IG. Hall, raided premises in Oamaru on 'Saturday night, as a result of which a ■ &Tge quantity of bottled beer, bottles, two casks of fermenting beer, and the ', various utensils going with a home-brew-<iitg outfit, were seized and taken to the Ipolice station. . It is understood court Ijproceedings will follow. ST. JOHN AMBULANCE , During the month of March the St. STohn Ambulance covered a distance of 346 Smiles, attending two accidents and effectling 15 removals. J '

A very enjoyable kitchen afternoon was tendered Miss Duff in the Kia Ora Schoolroom_ on Saturday afternoon. Several amusing competitions were held, and musical items were greatly appreciated. Mrs Durwood spoke in appreciative terms of Miss Duff's good qualities, and stated that she would be greatly missed in Kia Ora. Afternoon tea was provided, after which the guest of the afternoon was the recipient of many useful kitchen gifts, the reading of the verses attached to each gift causing a great deal of amusement. BIG BROTHER BILL Considerable interest is being.taken by the children of North Otago in Mothers' Day and the visit of Big Brother Bill, of 4YA, Dunedin, to Oamaru next Saturday, and a meeting of ladies interested has been convened for to-morrow afternoon in the Mayor's room at 4 o'clock. GOLF ; , There were about 50 members and friends at the opening day of the Ladies' Golf Club, when a welcome was extended to the new: president (Mrs Darling) by Mrs R. S. Orbell, on behalf of the club. Mrs Orbell also expressed the best wishes of the members in a valedictory speech to Mrs A. Men's Club on Saturday, at which there were about 50 members and friends present. The tables were beautifully decorated by Mrs H. B, M'Dowell,' and those present were the, guests of Mr and Mrs H. B. A rnixed foursome bogey match was played, in which P. Mulligan and Miss M'Quade and T. Banks and Mrs Irving were 3 down, the ladies being presented with prizes, the gifts of Mr C. C. Cook. LAWN TENNIS There was a large attendance of spectators at the Awamoa Club's court on Saturday afternoon to witness the final games in the Familton and Irvine Cups competitions. The weather was fine and dull, and the wind was rather troublesome to the players at times. The Familton Cup matches were not completed, and the final between A. Feathers and F. Gallagher will be played next Saturday. In the Irvine Cup semi-finals) a very interesting game was witnessed between Miss I. Romans and Miss K. Weavers. The match ran to three sets, and looked like anybody's game until right near the finish. Both contestants played splendid tennis, and delighted the onlookers with their bright, hard-hitting play. Miss Dora Miller easily accounted for Miss B. Douall in a somewhat uninteresting match. The final between Miss Miller and Miss Romans did not provide spectacular tennis, the feature of the match being Miss Miller's accuracy and steadiness. In the Familton Cup semi-finals two very close games were seen. Feathers defeated J. Familton in straight sets in a very keenly-fought match. Feathers was leading s—l5 —1 in the second set, but Familton caught up well to bring the score to .read s—all.5 —all. However, Feathers took the next two games and the match. Gallagher and G. Sumpter fought out an interesting game, in which both players produced good form, and treated the onlookers to spectacular tennis. Gallagher was too consistent, and by keeping up an attack on his opponent's backhand, took the match in straight sets. At the conclusion of the day's play, Mr K. Spoonnr (president of the association) presented the Irvine Cud to Miss Dora Miller, and congratulated her on her success in again annexing the cup. Following are the details of the games:— IRVINE CUP. Semi-final.—Miss D. Miller beat Miss B. M'Douall, 6—l, 6—l; Miss I. Romans beat Miss K. Weavers, 6—4, 5—6, 6—3. Final.—Miss D. Miller beat Miss I. Romans. 6—l. 6—3. FAMILTON CUP.. Semi-final. —F. Gallagher beat G. Sumpter, 7—5, B—6; A. Feathers beat J. Familton, 6—4, 7—5. Advice has been received that owing to difficulty in securing a team to make the southern tour, the match between Canterbury and North Otago will not be played this season. JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS Although cold, the weather was quite good for athletics on Saturday afternoon, and the Waitaki Junior High School sports attracted a large gathering of parents and friends at the school. The events were run off without delay, and the boys acquitted themselves well, many close finishes making the races very I interesting to the onlookers. The house

uniforms of the boys in red, dark blue, white, and light blue, proved a good innovation, enabling the competitions to be more easily followed. Miller House proved the strongest by gaining 77J points, followed by Douglas House with 49 points. The ball games were always interesting, and added variety to the athletics. The championship went to H. Robertson, who put up some fine performances to gain 14J points. Hawtin also ran well to take second place with Bates third. Afternoon tea was served on the front lawn at the school, which added to the enjoyment of the afternoon's outing. Results:— 75 Yards (under 12 years).—First heat: Crawshaw ], Dodds 2, Liddell 3. Although the day was fine, a fold wind was blowing across the field, making conditions unpleasant for both competitors and spectatoi'6. Nevertheless, this did not prevent large numbers of the .public being present,- and some excellent .performances were witnessed during the day. The sports meeting was made the more interesting by the appearance of athletes from Dunedin, Christchurch, Waimate, and Waikouaiti, besides a number of local competitors. There were large fields in all events, and keen competition existed throughout. The amateur meetings are becoming very popular with the public of Oamaru, and, with such a variety of events as was put through on Saturday, the spectators were entertained to an excellent afternoon's sport. In the sprints event of 100 yards L. Miller (W.8.H.5.) ran a great race off the 11 yards' mark, to beat the scratch man, W. J. Fitzsimmons (Christchurch) after a close finish. Fitzsimmons showed plenty of pace, and his performance in the 220 Yards Race was one of the finest seen in Oamaru for some time past. Off the scratch mark he soon overtook the front markers, to beat D. Dempster (Waikouaiti) on the tape. His win in this race was a very popular one. One of the most interesting races of the day was the One Mile Handicap, in which J. G. Barnes and E. Taylor, both .of Dunedin, were seen in action. Barnes is the present New Zealand champion, and won comfortably off scratch. J. W. Bradley (Waikouaiti), led the field until about 200 yards from the finishing post, when Barnes came up with a great burst of speed to win. T. G. Pearson (Palmerston), who beat Bradley for second place by inches, also ran a good race. Two Waitaki High School boys shared the honours in the 880 Yards and 440 Yards Races, L. W. Woods winning from Taylor. (Dunedin) in the former event, and M. H. Oram securing a good win in the 440 Yards. . The field events were also of a high standard, such noted performers as A. A. Cameron and M. R. Spillane being seen in action. The High Jump went to J. W. Anstey (Waimate), who cleared sft 4in, and with a handicap of 6|in beat Cameron by ljin. Cameron, however, took the Broad Jump and Throwing the Discus evente, and was third in Throwing the Hammer. A feature of the jumping was the performance put up by Miss Forbes, who cleared the remarkable height of 4ft B|in, which is the highest jump ever recorded by a lady in New Zealand. The Woodham Challenge Cup, awarded to the competitor gaining most points during the day,, was won. by A. A. Cameron (Oamaru), 9i points, with J. W. Anstey (Waimate), runner-up, being half a point behind. The president of the association (Mr L. V. Bryant) presented the cup to Cameron, and congratulated him on his excellent display during the afternoon. The Herbert Smith Cup for the 440 'Yards Secondary Schools' Relay Race, went to St. Kevin's, with Waitaki second.

In the evening the visiting competitors were entertained at a function in the Pipe Band Room, at which the officials and some members of the local bodies were also present. Mr L, V. Bryant occupied the chair. The following toast-list was honoured: —" Otago Centre" (Mr L. V. Bryant—Mr R. 0. Johnson); "Visitors" (Mr A. A. Cameron —Messrs Fitzsimmons and Johnston); " North Otago Amateur Athletic Association" (Mr G. BarnesMr Bryant); " Oamaru Borough Council (Mr M. K. M'Culloch—Mr F. C.
