POTATO GROWING IN PALMERSTON SOUTH

TO THE EDITOR.

Sns,—ln reply to your correspondent "S.P.Q.RV inquiry in .to-day's Otago Daily Times re potato growing by the Palmerston branch of the Women's Institute I should state that I made a mistake when I sent the weight to our Palmerston correspondent. The notice should have read from 15 "members,' not. 15 "sets." The 15 members were each given three sets, the total yield from 45 sets being 2031 b, 13£lb per member. The highest weight of 221 b was quite correct. The sets were planted in lea ground. All the manure applied was a dusting of lime, and when each set was planted a small quantity of wood ashes was also added. The variety planted was King Edward potatoes.—l am, etc., Mrs W. G. Hitchcock. Press Correspondent, Palmerton W.I. Palmerston, March 31.

"Master-beggars" alleged to have been earning from £SOO to £IOOO a year have been rounded up by the police at Moravska Ostrava. These men were the heads of a large organisation of beggars, whom they are stated to have fed, clothed, and housed. In return, each beggar had to hand over at least 2s a day to his chief. One of the "ordinary" beggars spent about 10s every night in a cafe which he frequented when "off duty." The fact that the Prince of Wales sent a scarf he had knitted himself to the Personal League of Service has caused a good deal of interest. He is, however, far from being the only celebrated man who finds relaxation in a pair of knitting needles. Earl Jellicoe, like many other sailors, is an expert at knitting. Sir Evelyn de la Rue, of the famous printing family, is also an expert knitter. He even invented a special wool-winding machine for hia own benefit.
