DUNEDIN GUN CLUB
THE LEETO CUP. At the Dunedin Gun Club's grounds, Green Island, on Saturday afternoon, the third novice contest in connection with the Leeto Cup was held, and attracted a good attendance. No members of an affiliated gun club were allowed to compete, and a feature of the event was that several of the competitors held the gun at the elbow, before raising to the shoulder, at the release of the clay bird. With a strong wind blowing across the flight of the birds, the shooters were provided with a severe test of trapshooting. Before shooting commenced, the president {Mr G. E. Turner) stated that the club had given the Leeto Cup to encourage trapshooting, and the condition of the 12 clay bird contest was that all competitors should commence from the 11 yard mark, retiring one yard for each break. The following were the best results:—W. Hare, Milton, (11 yards to 20 yards), 9 birds; J. K. 11. Begg (11 to 20), 9; Dr Greenslade (11 to 19), 8; V. Walker, Maungatua (11 to 19), 8; R. C. Bruce (11 to 19), 8; M. T. Soilness (11 to 17), 7; H. Hyland, Christchurch (11 to 17), 7; I. Styche (11 to 1G), 5; H. Edmonds (11 to 14), 4d; R. A. Umbers (11 to 14), 4; F. Bradley (11 to 14), 4. To decide the winner J. K. R. Begg and W. Hare were each allotted a further five birds from the 10 yard mark. At the fourth bird J. K. R. Begg proved the winner with four breaks against W. W. Hare's two breaks. In presenting the miniature cup to Mr Begg, Mr G. E. Turner mentioned that the shooters automatically handicapped themselves with each break, and some splendid trapshooting had been witnessed under adverse weather conditions for novices. Both the winner and runner-up were given a difficult task in the shoot-off, and the other competitors should be encouraged by their experience. Mr Begg briefly responded and called for cheers for the runner-up and his fellow competitors. An " open" six-bird handicap sweepstake followed, and was won by H. Hyland (Christchurch) with six breaks, the winner holding his gun in the field position. Second money was divided between L. E. Wilson and R. C. Bruce, each with five breaks. The matches were efficiently controlled by the club's referee (Mr A. Adamson), who also acted in the " safety first" responsibilities. Members of the club supplied guns free.
