OTAGO ELEVEN v. SOUTHLAND

HOME TEAM'S EASY WIN CENTURY TO HOLDEN The game between an Otago eleven and Southland was concluded on Logan Park main ground, and resulted in a win for the home team by 257 runs. Despite the previous day's play, the wicket was in good condition and the outfield was keen and fast. Otago, with 81 on for the loss of one wicket, took the score to 360 before Lynch declared with nine wickets down, leaving Southland, with a first inning's total of 121, with 452 to score for a win. Holden, with a faultlessly compiled 101, was, as on the first day, the outstanding batsman for Otago, while the bowling honours went to Nimmo. who took six wickets for 49 runs. In the initial stages of Southland's second innings, the side looked like going fairly cheaply, but a great last-wicket stand by Hawke and Agnew aaded 60 to the score, and the visitors' innings closed for 194. OTAGO'S SECOND INNINGS. Otago's not out pair, Uttley and Holden, opened to the bowling of Nesbit and Purdue. Both batsmen commenced well, but Uttley, after adding 16 to his overnight score, played forward to Nisbet and was smartly stumped by Carson. Ill—2 —42. The incoming batsman, Lynch, opened cautiously, but with seven,to his credit he placed one off Nisbet into the gully to Spence, who took an easy catch. 133—3—7. Agnew came on to bowl in place of Purdue, and Holden, who was batting attractively, brought his half-century up by cutting him through the slips for four. Chettleburgh, who had replaced Lynch, opened his account with a brace off Agnew, and with forceful shots all round the wicket soon had 20 on. Holden was scoring at a slower rate, but he was placing every shot beautifully, and he reached 70 with a nice square cut for two. M'Kelvey took over from Agnew, and O'Shea went on to bowl at the other end, Chettleburgh lifting his first ball from the latter bowler over the fence, and bringing his tally to 33. The next he snicked into the slips, where Hallamore missed a fairly easy catch. Purdue replaced O'Shea at the bowling crease, and Holden pulled his first ball for three, Chettleburgh sending the next two away for a four and a two. Chettleburgh'a 50 appeared when he drove Purdue to the boundary, but after notching another brace, he lifted one from M"Kelvey to Agnew at mid-on. 214—4 —52. Holden's score at this stage was 89, and on being joined by Groves he snicked Purdue for a single, a wild throw in giving him another four. His century came in a rather peculiar manner. He cut Nisbet for three, and an overthrow which reached the boundary gave him another four, which brought, his total to 101. A minute later he got his leg in front of one from Nisbet, after having given a chanceless display, which included 11 fours, four threes, a five, and a seven. 229—5—101. Priest came in, and Groves commenced to go for the bowling to such purpose that he had 30 on before Priest had scored. With his score at 36 he went for a hit off Agnew and was clean bowled, the same bowler getting the incoming batsman, Nimmo, with his next ball. 270—6—0. Torrance joined Priest, and this pair brought the tally to 288. before Purdue shattered Priest's stumps just as the luncheon adjournment was called. On resuming Silver partnered Torrance, who brought 300 up and his own total to 20 by driving Agnew nicely for a brace, but a little later Purdue skittled him with a ball that kept low. 309—9 —24. Jolly was the last batsman, and he and Silver joined in a lively and profitable partnership that added another 51 runs before Lynch declared, leaving Southland witli 452 to make to win. VISITORS AT THE WICKETS. Spence and O'Shea opened Southland's second innings, Nimmo and Silver handling the attack for the home team. Neither batsman was comfortable, and at the end of half an hour's play only nine runs had been scored. Groves took over from Silver, and with his second ball he tempted O'Shea out of his crease, Toomey whipEing the bails off before he could get ack.

Tapley was the next batsman, but with his score at six Nimmo got his middle stump. 24—2—6. Southern joined Spence, but the latter fell to a straight one from Nimmo, •having taken 46 minutes to compile 11. Hallamore partnered Southern, and with his first ball from Nimmo survived a confident appeal for a catch behind the stumps. Lynch took a turn at bowling at Groves's end, and Chettleburgh replaced Nimmo, but the batsmen found both of them fairly easy, and the halfcentury was hoisted with, a nice shot past cover by Hallamore. Jolly went on to bowl in place of Lynch and sent down a maiden to Hallamore. Only a single wa3 scored off his next over before Southern, stepping back to a rising ball, played it on after compiling a useful 18. 71 —4—lß. Hawke joined Hallamore, but the latter, who had been batting attractively, also fell a victim to Nimmo, having scored 32 by good shots all round the wicket. 86 — 5 —32. Hawke and Carson were now partnered, and Carson brought 100 up by driving Nimmo to the pickets. After the tea adjournment Carson went for the bowling and knocked up a bright 22 before he was dismissed by Nimmo, who also got M'Kelvey off his pads when the latter had scored seven. Nisbet, with nine to his credit, was Nimmo's next victim, the same bowler getting Purdue's wicket with his next ball. 134—9—0. Agnew joined Hawke, and these two made a determined last-wicket stand which yielded 60 before Agnew was run out. Agnew gave a bright display for his 41, which included three sixes. Scores: — OTAGO.
