OTAGO v. NORTH OTAGO

WIN FOR HOME SIDE DICKINSON'S BRIGHT DISPLAY A match between an Otago eleven and North Otago was played at the University Oval, Logan Park, on Saturday under excellent conditions. The visitors travelled from Oamaru by motor bus before the match, and asked that they should be allowed to field first. Otago's innings occupied the whole or the morning and was declared closed with seven wickets down for 328. A feature of the innings was the breezy display ot Dickinson, who was undefeated with 151. He was, however, very fortunate in being given several chances. He attacked all the bowlers alike, driving with great power. His score included 19 fours. Coupland gave a sound display for 58, and * Shepherd and Duncan batted brightly. Meikle, Carrington, and Maddigan were the best of the North Otago , bowlers, who were handicapped by weak fielding. . „..■■-. e North Otago, in its first innings, facing a strong battery of bowlers, scored 121. The outstanding performers were two Waitaki High School boys, M Arthur and Smith, the former of whom is only 16 years of age. Both gave workmanlike displays. All of the bowlers were treated with respect, Lemin, with three for 24, securing the best figures. The visitors collapsed when they tollowed on, facing the bowling of Knight and Smith, neither of whom had bowled in the first innings. Seven wickets were down for 34 runs when play was stopped by the failing light. The game was won by Otago, the rules of cricket providing that one day matches, unless played out, shall 'be decided on the first innings. OTAGO'S INNINGS. Coupland and Knight opened Otago's innings, facing the bowHng of Meikle. The first ball which Knight received swung and scattered his strumps, the total being five. Smith filled the vacancy, and the score was carried to 29 before he went for a hit and was ,also bowled by Meikle. , Constable was associated with Coupland in a useful partnership, during which runs came slowly. Eventually Carrington was tried, and Constable lifted his first ball, giving mid-on an easy catch. 62—3—16. The incomer, Dickinson, began m great style and rattled on 24 in eight minutes. The century was reached in 55 minutes, and Dickinson then played more quietly. When he was 32 he went out to play Smith, the slow bowler, and missed. Jones, behind the wickets, failed to take the ball, and Dickinson had a very lucky escape. Coupland reached 50 in 85 minutes. Dickinson was gradually overtaking him, but at 49 runs was dropped off Meikle, Blair failing to gather in a "sitter." Then Coupland lifted one from the same bowler to Carrington in the covers and was caught.—l6o—4—sß. Shepherd partnered Dickinson and at three cocked one up, but mid-off made no attempt to take the catch. Then Dickinson collected three fours off successive balls from Meikle. Runs continued to come quickly until Shepherd sent a ball from Carrington to mid-off, and Uttley took the catch. 223—5—23. Duncan joined Dickinson, who, after reaching the eighties, was quieter, but he was soon getting them away again and reached the century in 93 minutes. He brought 250 up with a four after. 140 minutes' play and was then missed at point, a simple catch. Duncan had been at the wickets for exactly half an hour when he went forward to Brown and was bowled. 283—6-27. . . •. Six of the first nine overs were maidens, and then Brown brightened the proceedings by driving Elmes to the boundary. M'Arthur opened his score when he snicked one from Mmes and Hawkesworth failed to take the catch, the ball going away for a brace. Then Brown was caught by Dickinson ott a no-ball from Coupland. After four overs Coupland was replaced by Lemin, who bowled Brown with his first ball. 26—2—10. • , , Carrington partnered M'Arthur and shaped well until he lifted a ball from Lemin to Dickinson at mid-off. 44—3~7». The innings closed for 126 when Blair was bowled by Procter. North Otago followed on and rainier and Blair opened. Knight was given the ball, and his first delivery found Palmer's wicket, M'Arthur filling the vacancy. Smith opened from the other end, and after 11. runs had been scored he bowled Blair. After the addition of two runs Meikle also fell a victim to the slow bowler. Before another run had been scored M'Arthur skied a ball from Knight, and Hawksworth took an easy catch. When M'Laren went out of his ground and was stmped by Hawksworth five were down for 16, and Smith had an average of three for four. Carrington then attacked the slow bowler, but Smith, after a short stay, became another victim, seven wickets being down for 34. Stumps were then drawn owing to the failing -light.
