SLACKNESS IN COAL TRADE
CONFERENCE ON WEST COAST GOVERNMENT INQUIRY SOUGHT. (Per United Press Association.) WESTPORT, December 17. A conference of representatives of the coal mining companies, the Miners’ Council, the waterside workers, the Chamber of Commerce, the Progress League, local bodies, and other interests was held in the Town Hall this afternoon to consider the coal The Mayor (Mr J. H. Harkness) presided. There were also present Messrs H. E. Holland, M.P., and W. H. M'lntyre, M.L.C. In a general discussion the state of the coal trade was considered from its various aspects. The meeting set up a committee to deal with the question of reduced railway and shipping freight and harbour charges, and generally to inquire into the cause of the slackness in the coal mining industry, and means whereby an improvement might be effected. It was also decided to ask the Government to set up a commission to inquire comprehensively into the produc- ■ tion, transport, and marketing of coal.
