THE Otago Daily Times. “Inveniam viam aut faciam.” MONDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1861. Shipping Intelligence.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

The Molynoux having been constituted a port of entry, Dir Pcrcival Dale has been appointed Acting Sub-collector of customs at that port. COMMERCIAL. The gold exported from this port, from the Ist to the 11th December, amounts to 38,452 ozs. 12 dwts., of which a very considerable portion has been shipped by private hands—principally diggers, more or less successful, who are returning to Victoria to fetch their families, or to spend the Christmas amongst their friends and relations. The general tone of our market is healthy, and there is every reason to anticipate a good beginning of the new year. . . .

Mention has been made in the Melbourne papers that great numbers of men have been compelled to work on the roads at ss. per day. We may state that there is not in the employ of the Government, in or out of town, 200 men, and these are getting 6s. per diem. The arrivals and departures at the Port of Dunedin from Ist Jan. to 11th Dec., 1861, show a total balance in favour of Otago of 12,944 males, 859 females, and 651 children, an aggregate increase to the population of 14,454 souls. A most ludicrous attempt at the formation of a Trade Union was made on Friday evening by a few of the journeymen carpenters of this town. A meeting was called by placard, and about fifty or sixty assembled in the Odd-Fellows’ Hall. A chairman was elected; a few speeches on the necessity of the trade being protected made; resolutions affirming the desirability of such a union passed, and a code of rules unanimously agreed upon: but when the time for enrolling the names came, it was found that only four, of all present, were willing to join such a society. The subscriptions of these four were therefore returned to them, and the meeting separated in disgust. We observe that a portion of the Town Belt is being cleared for the purpose of erecting military barracks —a commanding and fine site is chosen at the back of Park House, London-street. Tile amounts received from Ist to 30th November by the Provincial Government of Otago for miners’ rights and licenses on the Diggings at Tuapcka. £2,153 155.; Waitahuna, £2,962 10s. Total, £5,110 ss.
