MARRYING YOUNG AGAIN
BOY AND GIRL MATCHES WEDDINGS IN SCOTLAND. More boy and girl marriages arc taking place in Scotland than ever before. The age of one recent bride was 10. And the great majority of these romantic young couples come from working-class districts. It is difficult to obtain accurate statistics, but an authority on the matter stated lately that in Edinburgh, for insance, the average of couples under 20 being married at present is at least one in every four, and that one boy and girl marriage is registered in tlie city every day. In Glasgow, and indeed in all parts of the country, there is a similar rush of young couples to bo married. The assumption that the “ dole ” or other public assistance encourages young couples to marry is not always justified, hut it is thought that many young people, are acquiring a new recklessness akin to the war-time psychology of the war period, when the unsettled times produced so many ‘‘desperate” marriages. Apart from this tendency, it is noteworthy that September seems to be putting up a new record as the “marrying month ” in Scotland. For some rears registrars have been noting the growing popularity of the ninth month with couples bent on matrimony, and September long ago left June behind as the favourite month for marriages.
