BRANCH ACTIVITIES

The monthly meeting of the Pukekoma Women's Institute was held on Saturday evening, November 26. The president (Mrs R. B. Morgan) presided over a fair attendance of members, several visitors also being present. The roll call, “My Favourite Dinner,” was well responded to. The monthly competition, “ Best collection of sweets from lib of sugar,” resulted in Miss M. Hallum gaining place with seven varieties, and Mrs F. M. Dow second with four varieties.

There was a large gathering of members and friends at the monthly meeting of Papatowai, held recently. After the usual business had been dealt with Mrs W. Tubman, the president, gave <an interesting account of the address given by Miss MacMillan in Balclutba. Mrs Dixon, of Maclennan, then demonstrated the icing of cakes, a demonstration much appreciated by all present.

It nearing Christmas and being the last meeting of the year, a festive spirit prevailed at this month’s gathering of Waikouaiti. Visitors from Goodwood were very welcome. Mrs Jenkins, president, gave a short but interesting account of her recent visit to the Women’s Federation Conference. Mrs D. Park gave a demonstration on the making of a useful and inexpensive door mat. Two competitions were held, the first, an article suitable for a Christmas gift, which was won by Mrs Austin with Mrs Kerr second. Miss M’Gillvary first and Mrs Tenuet second were awarded the prizes in the second competition. Mesdames Austin and M’Kcnzie favoured the company with a vocal duet, Miss Summers rendered a solo, and Mesdames Jenkins and Park an amusing dialogue. The hotesses for the afternoon were Mrs Goodley and Miss Maxwell.

The December meeting of Green Island was well attended, Mrs W. T. Smellie presiding. An interesting article from the Institute Journal was read by the president. Roll call, “ Sing, say, or pay,” was heartily responded to, a member _ reading an interesting letter just received from America. A letter was read from the Brighton Institute with a generous offer of a cottage at a small rental for the benefit of members requiring a holiday or rest. , This was well received and much appreciated. The Social Committee then took charge of the meeting. A novel competition was won by Mrs Shepherd. Musical items were contributed by Mesdames Burk, Christensen, Mehelski, Geddes, MTnnes, and J. Miller. A second competition resulted in several gaining equal numbers of points.

The Dunbaek branch held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Miss Bell presiding over a large attendance. An interesting demonstration of icing a Christmas cake was given by Mrs Murray. A letter from institute link, Shalford, Surrey, England, was received. The following competitions were held: —Best bowl of roses, won by Mrs Mathcson; Christmas present not costing more than two shillings, won by Miss J. M Wilson, Miss N. Pringle second; Christmas present costing more than two shillings, won by Mies I. Pringle, Mrs Prringle second. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Kelly and Stanley. On Saturday, 3rd inst., the Dunbaek Institute Croquet Club was officially opened in the presence of a 1 large attendance of members, visitors, and representatives of the various local sports bodies. Miss Bell, president, in a short address extended thanks to all those who had assisted in the formation of the lawn, etc., and then, formally declared the lawn open. Mrs James Chapman played off the first ball, and the first game on the green was played by Mesdames Chapman, Bowker, and Wilson and Miss Brander. Congratulations were conveyed to the club by Mr R. MTntosh on behalf of the Football and Cricket Clubs; Mr E. Brownlie, Tennis Club; Mrs E. Stanley, Women’s Institute; and Mr A. D. Yeates, Presbyterian Church Committee. Afternoon tea was provided, and in the evening an enjoyable dance was hold.
