MANIOTOTO COUNTY

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Maniototo County Council was held at Naseby last week. Those present were: —Crs. Robert Scott (chairman), W. Howell, H. W. Davis, E. Morgan, Neil Nicolson, T. A. Lowis, W. M. Mathewson, Peter Aitken and T. Hall. RANGER’S REPORT. The county ranger reported that four head of cattle and seven head of horses had been impounded during the month, while 28 head of cattle and 180 head of sheep were released before reaching the pound. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The county engineer (Mr R. J. Black) reported as follows on the work done during the month: — Highways.—A 12-inch diameter culvert was placed near Two Mile. A fourfoot diameter culvert is in progress near Dunstan Creek on the St. Bathans-Cam-brian section. Shag to Lauder Creek.: Grading and scarifying were carried out on Ranfurly section and towards Kyeburn. Grading from the Lauder boundary is in progress. Gravelling repairs were carried out on the Shag-Swinburn section. Scarifying and grading were carried out from Waipiata to Patearoa. The Sowburn crossing was repaired and gravelling repairs done on the WaipiataPatearoa section.

General. —Hamilton’s Creek bridge and approaches on Tregonning’s road were renewed. Repairs • were carried out to the Nascby pound by improving the entrance road, repairs and renewal of sod and stone walls, new gate, rabbit netting protection and the whole enclosed by barb wire fence. In response to word from Waihemo County I inspected a partly burned bridge at the Mareburn boundary. Repairs will cost approximately £lO and will be shared by Waihemo County. Kyeburn Riding.—Grading was carried out on Scott’s lane and the back Swinburn road from S. Bartram’s to the Kyeburn. A 12-inch diameter culvert was placed near Mann’s Creek, and a swamp drained to the creek. The Upper Kyeburn crossings were repaired, also Pearson’s and Durward’s. Application is made for renewal of Coyle’s crossing during the fine weather period of the year. The lower end of the Naseby-Kyeburn Ridge road was graded. Approximately 20 chains of light gravelling were done on the back Swinbnrn road pinches. Mount Ida Riding—The following were graded:—The lower section of the Ranfurly-Naseby back road, the upper section of the Home Gully road, the Ranfurly-Naseby main road, approximately three miles of the Waipiata-Kye-burn road, Hewitt’s track, and the section of the Ranfurly-Patearoa road from Yeung’s corner to Ranfurly. Also onehalf day’s planing was done on the Waipiata sports ground. Drainage repairs were carried out in Caulfield street. Ranfurly, and are in hand in Bute street. Gimmerburii Riding.—Sharkey s road was graded. A nine-inch culvert was extended on this road and light gravelling was done. The. Eweburn crossings were repaired. Gravelling on Graham s pinch on the Maniototo-Wedderburn road was extended and a nine-inch culvert placed on the hill. Repairs were done near the Wctherburn at Highfleld. The creek crossings on tlie Higlificld road Jinn the Highfield runs road were improved to Kearney’s corner. The 'repairs to the spring near W. Blakeley’s were left over for weather results. Lauder Riding.—Planks were repaired on the Cambrian School track. Highway work only was done in this area for the month. ~ ~ St. Bathan’s Riding.—The Ida Valley Railway road was graded. Repairs were completed to culvert on the Blackstone Hill Runs road. Idaburn Riding.—Grading is in progress on Agnew’s road. Contract No. 203, gravelling on Reefs road was completed. Grading is intended on M. M‘Knight’s road. . Hyde Riding.—The following roads were graded:—-Waipiata-Kokonga from the bridge junction to Hastie’s. Tregonnings road'and part of O’Neill’s road. Filling and gravelling were carried out to a sidling on Hyde-Kokonga road, and further corner work done near Dowling’s Creek. Proposed improvements at Rock and Pillar boundary at an estimated total cost of £lO 10s were agreed to by the Taieri County. Serpentine Riding.;—On the Pacrau Runs road a small culvert was, placed near Glass Creek, and the water tables were attended to from the Loganburn to Elliott’s. Repairs were done on the . Blackball road. Gravelling is in progress on Manson’s slope on the Loganburn Ford road. Puketoi Riding.—Grading on Puketoi Runs road was completed from R. Sharkey’s to J. Kerr’s, and also a short section of Kot-r’s road and the Closeburn road. O’Neill’s road and the Pigburn road were graded. Water were improved near J. Kerr’s. Gravelling is in progress on O’Neill Bros.’ road.

CORRESPONDENCE. The district engineer, New Zealand Railways Department, Dunedin, wrote forwarding a plan showing the old pipe line reserve belonging to the department at Ranfurly, and .asking if the council was prepared to lease the reserve at a rental of £1 per annum, plus deed fee f I.—lt was' decided 'that 'the clerk

inquire whether the department was prepared to sell the land to the council, and, if so, quote a price. The South Island Motor Union forwarded a copy of a letter sent to all South Island members of Parliament protesting against the unequal distribution of reading funds. It was decided that a copy of the protest be forwarded to Mr W. A, Bodkin, M.P., and that he be asked to use his best efforts to secure a more equitable distribution of the funds. J. I. Fraser (Ranfurly), on behalf of Mr Walter Johnsen, applied for permission to erect a swing gate across the side road leading from the Main St. Bathaiis road to Surface Hall.—lt was decided that the application be. granted provided that the provisions of the Public Works Act are complied with. Eight applications were received for the position of dog tax collector.—o. R. Cambridge was. appointed' collector of dog tax and registrar of dogs for 1033. It was resolved that the next meeting of the council be held on January 23. Four tenders for the supply of dog collars were received, that of J. E. Watson and Co., at 50s'per 100, being accepted.
