DUTIABLE GOODS
SMUGGLING BY AMATEURS OFFENDERS -MOSTLY WOMEN. LONDON, December 12. Over £150,000 was collected in Britain in 1932 from amateur smugglers endeavouring to conceal dutiable goods, principally jewellery, liquor, tobacco, perfume, and silks. Baggage has been so thoroughly examined-since the wider imposition of duties that smuggling is decreasing. Only flagrant cases are taken to court. The offenders, mostly women, are often ordered to pay double the duty.
