A BOMB EXPLOSION. COTTAGE PARTIALLY WRECKED. SYDNEY, October 22. A bomb explosion in the suburb of Bexley partially wrecked a cottage owned by Mrs Harris, who had been the recipient of threatening letters. ANTI-EVICTION RIOT. FOURTEEN MEN SENTENCED. SYDNEY, October 24. (Received Oct. 24, at 8 p.m.) After a third trial 14 men who were concerned in the anti-eviction riot at Bankstown in June, ID3I, were sentenced to terms of imprisonment up to one year. One of the accused abused the judge as he was being removed. . Twelve of the number already had convictions.
AMENDED CRIMES ACT. THE FIRST PROSECUTIONS. SYDNEY, October 24. (Received Oct. 24, at 11 p.m.) The first prosecutions under the amended Federal Crimes Act dealing with Communism were launched against four men who solicited contributions for an alleged illegal organisation, the Communist Party in Australia. The defendants are Francis Devanncy, Uobert Gray, Samuel Frew, and Joseph Ryan. The charge, which occupied three hours in reading, arises out of an appeal for funds through the Communist organ, the Workers' Weekly. The hearing was adjourned. THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION. LINK WITH OTHER CHURCHES. SYDNEY, October 24. (Received Oct. 25, at 1 a.m.) The Anglican Synod, which is meeting in Sydney to discuss the constitution of the church as an Australian body, thereby cutting the legal nexus with the English Church, carried a motion, moved by Dr Radford, of Goulburn. approving of certain statements agreed upon at a conference witli the oi. Catholic churches at Bonn in 1031. These statements provide that the churches of the Anglican communion ant. those of the old Catholic Church agree to admit each others members to participation in the sacraments. The Anglican communion will thus be linked with seven national churches in Europe.
