GOLF

FIXTURE FOR SATURDAY Otago.—Fourball Bogey. St. Clair. —Bogey Handicap.

The Belleknowes Club held a Mixed Foursomes Competition on Saturday, for which there was a large Held, The scoring generally was of a high standard, and the result was , a tie between two pairs— F. Olsen and Mrs M'Lean and J. Hope and Mrs Scott, the net score being 63. The St. Clair Club is top-dressing all the greens at the present time, and temporary greens had to be resorted to at every hole last week-end. The rain which fell on Monday night will benefit the links and will supply the necessary moisture to complete the top-dressing, so that there is every prospect that the proper greens will be fit for use for the coming weekend.

NEW ZEALAND LADIES' TOURNAMENT

The annual North v. South Island match resulted in a win for the North. Miss Gaisford accounted for Miss Kay, who played first for South, and Mrs Collinson defeated Mrs Dodgshun. Miss I Kay has now lost to Miss Gaisford for the tliird time in succession, the three times being the final of the New Zealand Championship in 1931, the final of the Canterbury Championship in 1932, and the present inter-island match. Miss Kay would appear to be a much better card and pencil player than match player. There is probably no other woman in New Zealand who can produce such sensational figures as can Miss Kay. but she very, often seems to lose touch when she is being, hard pressed in match play. In the afternoon, after the inter-island match. Miss Kay. returned a brilliant medal round of 69. and thereby estab- ,| lished a record for the Highfield course. TESTING GOLF BALLS The latest invention for the , testing of golf balls of varying sizes, weights, and markings is a machine consisting of springs and weights mounted on a steel frame not dissimilar to the tripod used in photography. Bolted to a hollow metal tube is an ordinary, steel-shafted driver, with a fairly deep face, which is swung back and released at : the ball under a pressure of 6001 b. The action of the mechanical driver, which ; is built on a deep concrete base 4o ensure perfect stability. is constant and unfailing. It is, therefore, possible accurately to gauge the flight, carry, and the distance obtained by varying types of balls as regards size, weight, . and marking, the last being a most important.;and the least understood factor in- the. search for maximum efficiency in the matter of distance in a golf ball., Three tests of modern balls wore both interesting and significant. . The ’ first, made with the latest type of''ball, constructed according to ■ British specification (1.620 z and I.62in’,'diameter), gave;a carry of 248 yards, ,and.a total distance of 276 yards. The second, test with the pv.es-' ent American standard.'ball (T.620z and I. diameter).gave a maximum carry.’Of, 248 and a distance (carry, and run combined) of 285. yards, a gain on the British ball of nine, yards. Not a lot, to be sure, but sufficient to indicate that it has been found possible, ftp defeat the aim of those, who fondly-jbelievc that a larger ball would cut down, length *of shot. The further tests showed. that the, British ball was not affected by l the wind as: much as the. lilrger American, ball.- That ’ this. is not ..overlooked - by at least- one modern champion is shown, by the fact that, Sarazeh, carried both the American, and British standard balls during the British Open, using the American down wind and the British ball against the wind. MEETING OF COUNCIL The following report of the meeting of the council of -the New Zealand Golf Association (Inc.), held at the secretary’s office, Wellington.-on. October 3, has been received: — The chairman (Sir Alexander Roberts) welcomed Mr A, R. Sclanders, a new member of the council. The Fitzroy Golf Club, New Plymouth, was elected a member of the association. The Everslie and Manurewa Golf Clubs, which have now amalgamated with the Mimukau Golf Club, consequently tendered their resignations from membership, the Manukau Golf Club having become a member. The council decided to give notice of a motion at the annual meeting to amend the rules of the association slightly, and also to move a resolution authorising a rebate to affiliated clubs equal to 20 per cent, of the subscriptions which they have paid in respect of the current financial year. The council further decided to ask for authority from the meeting to make a considerably larger grant to the New Zealand Ladies’ Golf Union than has been 'done in previous . years. ‘ There was a full discussion as to the date and location of the Kirk-Windeyer Cup matches for 1933, and it was finally decided, that the matches should be played on one of the golf courses at Auckland, the decision as regards the course to be made at a later meeting. It was decided that the matches should be played about Easter (the middle of April), and that the golfing authorities in Australia be notified accordingly.
