There was a considerable increase during the first quarter of this year in the number of persons receiving poor law relief in England. Men, women, .and children receiving relief at the end of March numbered 1,188,077. By comparison with the figures at the end of 1931, the March total showed an increase of 87,517 (or 8 per cent.) and an increase ol ■ 158,063. (or 15.4 per cent.) compared with the total at the end of March, 1930.
