PORT CHALMERS BOWLING CLUB

Preparations for the opening of' the season’s activities are now being made by the Port Chalmers Bowling Club. Yesterday a number of relief workers were engaged to clear up the grounds and put the green in order. The green is looking particularly well at the present time, and should be in splendid playing order when the club members settle down to the season’s play. The usual opening function will be held at the pavilion on Saturday afternoon, and - it is expected that howlers-will be present from the various Dunedin clubs, and also officials from the Dunedin Bowling Centre and the Dominion Council. 'LEAVING FOR AUCKLAND, Mr R. Miller, who has disposed of his interest in Quarantine Island to two returned soldiers from Christchurch, intends to leave shortly for . Auckland, where he will, take up -his residence. >■-It is the intention of numerous friends from all parts of the Lower Harbour to tender Mr Miller a farewell social to-morrow night. The function will be held in the hall built by Mr Miller on Quarantine Island.,, , • , ■ PORT CHALMERS WATERFRONT Work was resumed on the Port Chalmers waterfront yesterday morning after being interrupted by heavy rain on Monday afternoon. The Federal Line steamer Norfolk finished' discharging the Dunedin portion of her London cargo in the afternoon and sailed last evening for Bluff. The steamer Antigone is still discharging Ocean Island at the Bowen wharf. She will come to the Upper Harbour towards the end of the week and discharge the balance of her cargo at the Ravensbourne wharf, after which the Antigone will probably dock at Port Chalmers for .cleaning and painting. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion steamer Raranga, which has been, delayed in the north on account of bad weather, is expected to berth at Port Chalmers next Sunday. . She will load products and l* ve stock, and will sail finally ftom Port Chalmers on October 18 for London, via Cape Horn. ; : The Union Company’s east coast trader Wingatui will .dock at Port Chalmers towards the end of this week for cleaning and painting. TRAWLER WAITANGI <; It is understood that Mr W. Durrey. who was unsuccessful in obtaining the old tug Plucky for conversion into a trawler, has purchased the steam trawler Waitangi. This vessel is a well-known unit of the Port Chalmers fishing fleet, and is now being overhauled and refitted by her new owner. . PRODUCTIVE RELIEF WORKS Improvements are being made in many directions .by relief workers in and near the borough. There is still considerable activity at Mussel Bay, where the landscape has been changed for the better with the progress of the reclamation scheme. , Relief workers and Borough Council employees are engaged in levelling the spoil after it has been pumped through, the tunnel pipe line by the dredge Vulcan, and the area enclosed by the sand wall has been almost filled in to a depth of several feet. At the recreation ground in the rear of the Mussel Bay railway station a number of relief workers are engaged in cleaning up the area and improving the. Cricket Club’s wicket. The main road between Port Chalmers and Ravensbourne is receiving attention, gangs of relief workers being located at various parts',of the thoroughfare. The improvements Already made to the road are very noticeable, especially near St. Leonards, where sharp corners are .being removed and the .tall gum trees trimmed.
