FILM STAR’S WILD RIDE

MYSTERIOUS MISS GARBO THROWING OFF PURSUERS. Renowned as the most mysterious of all film stars, Miss Greta Garbo was the central figure in a recent hue-and-cry episode which thrilled a number of her admirers in America. In order to evade followers Miss Garbo slipped out of a train which was conveying her from Hollywood at a small station in the suburbs of New York. As a second precaution she was accompanied by a woman friend of about the same appearance as herself. Both wore upturned coat-collars, hats jambed down over the eyes, and smoked glasses. This was not enough to shake off admirers, and when the two women separated. Miss Garbo stepping into a taxi cab with an unknown young man in a grey suit, it was the star that a trail of following cabs pursued. The chase led first through the centre of the city and then 50 miles out into Westchester County, Greta crouching in the cab, with streaming hair. Then the taxi cab suddenly turned round and drove back, to pull up at an expensive Bronxville hotel, where the star leapt out. While the mystified employees and management were answering questions, Miss Garbo and her companion had dashed through to a door on the other side and taken a fresh cab. When the second cab’s trail was picked up later, it was found to lead to the Hotel Astoria, but the elusive actress had disappeared from it hours earlier into impenetrable seclusion. Miss Garbo, it was stated, will shortly sail from America to Sweden in a ship whose name is being kept secret. “ I am going to Sweden for a long rest,” she is reported to have said. “ I need a vacation.”
