CENTRAL OTAGO

(From Our Own Correspondent.) ALEXANDRA, October 11. THE WEATHER. The weather, though very warm, has been threatening for some days, and on Friday evening a light rain commenced to fall, and it was hoped it would continue throughout the night. However, only four points were registered, Saturday being a beautifully fine day, and Sunday fine but overcast. On Monday a very welcome rain fell intermittently throughout the day, and the benefit which must accrue from this will be inestimable, as the whole countryside was very parched. CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. An enthusiastic meeting of supporters of athletics was held in Alexandra on Thursday evening with the object of reviving the Alexandra Caledonian Society, which for many years held very successful gatherings. Mr Henry Hesson was in the chair, and he briefly outlined the objects of the meeting. Eventually, Dr 4 E. Gladstone moved—“ That a society be formed, and that it carry on from the old Caledonian Society, and that it be called the Alexandra Caledonian Society. —This was carried unanimously. The following office-bearers were then elected: —Patrons, Mr W. A. Bodkin, M P and Dr A. E. Gladstone; president, Mr Henry Hesson: vice-presidents— Messrs W. Cardine. D. Provan, W. R. Lloyd Williams, M. M'Grath, W. 11King, and R. Campbell; joint secretaries, Messrs W. J. Russell and J. A. Russell; treasurer, Mr F. R. Whitelock; superintendent of sports, Messrs W. H. King and Arthur Ashworth; handicapper, Mr \ Parsons; assistant handicapper, Air J. M'Laughlan; starter, Mr J. H. Keddell; timekeeper, Mr W. Carhne, jun.; assistant timekeeper, Mr R. A. Long. Judges: Running—Dr Gladstone and Messrs W. R. Lloyd Williams, A. Ashworth, and G. D. Fisher; wrestling. Air George Hesson, sen.; jumping, Air E. A. Cockburn; piping and dancing, Mr D. Al'Kechnie. Protest Committee—Di Gladstone, Aleesig Henry Hesson and I*. R Whitelock; Programme Committee— Mcsssrs D. Provan, Arthur Ashworth, M. M'Grath, W. Carhne,, and G. Fisher. The membership fee was faxed at is. It was decided to endeavour to arrange to hold sports on Alonday, January 2. ECONOMIC CIRCLE. The last meeting for the season of the Alexandra, Economic Circle was neld on Thursday, when there wa« a large attendance, presided over by Mr A. Ashworth. The meeting took the form of a debate, the subject being “ That the investment of money for gain is sound in principle and worksite the advancement of our economic life.” The affirmative side was taken by Messrs F. Eric Spain, G. L. Strang, and J. Lunn, and the negative by Messrs ET Giddens and W. J. Russell. Messrs C E. Richards and J- D. Watt judged the debate, the affirmative side winning by the narrow margin of three points. BOWLING AND CROQUET CLUBS. In glorious weather and with the greens in excellent order, the official opening of the Alexandra Bowling and Croquet Clubs took place on Saturday afternoon. Bowling Club and of the Central Otago Bowling Centre, welcomed the visitors, and said he hoped that a successful season would eventuate. He called on Mr W. Toms (vice-president of the Central Otago Bowling Centre) to present the certificate for the champion rink, for last season, which had been won by the Alexandra Club. . , " , Mr Toms congratulated the Alexandra Club on its success fast season. He also congratulated it on the large attendance, which augured well for a very successful season. He paid a tribute to the excellent state of the green, and then presented the Alexandra rink —Messrs W. Hewitt (skip), W. Simcoe, J. Gardner; and G. W. T. Campbell—each with a certificate and also a framed certificate for the club. Mr W. Hewitt briefly replied on behalf of the ririk. 'iMr Sunderland called on : Mrs J. A. O’Kane (president of the Alexandra Ladies’ Croquet Club) to roll the first bowl of the season. At the conclusion of the bowling opening the gathering adjourned to the croquet greens, where Mr Sunderland made the first hoop for the season. The ladies then dispensed afternoon tea. PERSONAL. Mr G. L. Stevenson, clerk in the local railway station, has received notice of his transfer to Wellington. He will be replaced on the local staff by Mr J. D. Moran, of Dunedin, Mr W. M'Hntcheson, chief postmaster of Dunedin, accompanied by Miss M'Hutchcson, is at present on a visit to Alexandra.
