PALMERSTON NOTES

(From Oue Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, October 10, BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr W. H. Hopkins), and Crs Riddle, Warren, Thomas, Haggie, Morrison, Thomson, Earley, and M'Gregor. The foreman of works reported that a bridge had been repaired on the south boundary road. Footpaths had been weeded and channels cleaned out on Tiverton, Sunday, and Ronaldsay streets. A ditch had been cleaned out on Goodwood road. Ashes had been levelled on the show ground. Cinders had been spread on the footpath on Clifton road. During the month the power grader had been employed on the highways. The water meter near the cemetery had been uncovered; but there seemed no way of getting, it out except by taking out the whole casting and thus cutting off the water supply to the Sanatorium. A start had been made to kerb and channel on Tiverton street. —Received. Miss M'Ritchie applied for a rebate on hall charges for a recent bring and buy sale in aid of the manse funds conducted by the lady bowlers. —Received. Mr Ivon A. Borton again wrote on behalf of Mrs Cameron in connection with flow of water in the creek past her property.—Received. The Works Committee was asked to interview Mrs Cameron. The secretary of the A. and P. Society applied for the_ use of the Town Hall and supper room for •- the night of January 27, 1933.—Granted. Mrs Appleby was granted permission, subject to the health officer’s _ approval, to make alterations to her premises. The usual rebate of rates was granted to the Athenaeum. Traffic Inspector P. Laughton forwarded hi s monthly report, which was received. The Health Department notified that a reduction of 10 per cent, would now be made on health inspection expenses.—Received. The chief inspector of fisheries acknowledged receipt of a petition to stop netting on the Shag River, and promised to give careful consideration to the question. —Received. Several departmental circulars were received The Mayor and Crs M'Gregor, Haggie, Thomas, Warren, and Riddle were appointed a committee to bring in some small scheme to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the borough. Accounts amounting to £239 17s 5d were passed for payment. The Works Committee reported that the streets were in fair order. —Received. The Water Committee reported that the reservoirs were full. It was recommended that the water connections applied for by Empire Garage and Bank of New Zealand should be granted.—lt was decided to have the pipe line leading to the reservoirs straightened where there is an elbow. It was decided to recommend the Unemployment Committee to grant men to the Railways Department to clear willows, etc., in the creek running through the railway property. The Reserves Committee reported that gorse required clearing on some sections. The reserve had been ploughed, and was now ready for sowing. Some seats in the hall required to be repaired.—Received. It was reported that the meter at the sanatorium had been read daily by the clerk lately, and it was not in good working order. As the meter belonged to the Hospital Board, it was recommended that that body should have it repaired. In the meantime, an average amount of water would be charged for. Cr Haggie inquired why the scheme to tar-seal the main street had been abandoned. On being informed of the expense, he said he considered that something should be done to abate the dust nuisance, and referred to the' tar-sealed road from Hampden to Hillgrove.—Cr Riddle said he had seen a similar street to the main one cheaply tared and standing well. —Other councillors spoke in favour of ’’doing something, and it was decided to invite Mr T. M. Ball, highways engineer, to meet the council and discuss the matter.
