GRANTS FOR RELIEF

ALLEGATIONS OF THEFT ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. (Pen United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, October 11. Charges of the theft of some money granted from the Mayor’s Fund for the relief of dependents of men imprisoned following the tramway strike disturbances and of forgery of receipts for amounts misappropriated were laid against Herbert Edwin Barnsley in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Barnsley, it was alleged, had been given a sum of 27s for distribution and had failed to account for 21s. He had, it was .alleged, forged receipts from the persons who should have received the money. He was also charged with the misappropriation of another amount of 9s. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was committed to the Supreme Court, for trial on the forgery charges. On the summary charges of theft he was convicted and sentence was deferred. Bail was allowed in the sum of £loo' and one security of £IOO.
