CYCLING

PACIFIC CLUB'S RACE. The Pacific Cycling Club held a race from Outram over a course of approximately 22 miles from Outram through Berwick to Henley, and back to Outram by way of Allanton. A field of 11 riders faced the starter and set off with a strong following wind! The course for the main part was in good condition, but the stretch from Allanton to Outram proved hard going and troublesome as it had been newly metalled. The last few miles were ridden in the teeth of a strong wind aud this considerably affected the times. The limit man, B. Oakes (7min) set off at a fast clip ahd was followed at intervals until the scratch men left with M'Callum setting a gruelling pace. Sanson and Johnston (6£min) Boon overtook Oakes, but were themselves overtaken by Thompson, Templetoh and Foster. At Berwick Sanson and Foster left Oakes, and Thomson had the misfortune to have a puncture. The back markers had not made up a great deal of time at Henley, and at this stage Sanson was going well, closely pursued by Foster and Johnson. Then came A. Blackie (3min) riding strohgly on his own, followed by C. Lueas (2miti) and W. Templeton (smin). Hansen had retired and M'Callum overtook Cooper (2min). At Allanton Foster and Sanson stood out as likely winners, and M'Callum was a certainty .for time honours. In a close finish Sanson led Foster home by tW6 lengths, and then there was a gap until A. Blackie and Lucas came in sight riding together. In a close finish for third place Lucas prevailed by a small margin, Half a minute later M'Callum, Cooper and Templeton arrived in a bunch, M'Callum winning the sprint home easily and gaining the fastest time. Templeton, who has now been riding about eight years, rode a solid race for one who is almost a veteran and did well to finish With M'Callum. The results are as follow: C. Sanson (6|min) 1, G. Foster (4mm 2; C. Lucas (2min) 3, A. Blackie (3min) 4, F. Johnson I (6Jmin) 5, D. M'CaSum (scr) 6. Fastest time, D. M'Callum (66min 32sec). The' race was controlled by Messrs C. A. Lucas, J. B. Wilson, G. Deans, A. Blackie and J. Leslie. OTAGO CLUB. The Otago Athletic and Cycling Club held the final race for the Hinchcliffe Cup on Saturday from Beale's Hotel to Henley and return, a distance >of 32 miles. A field of 12 riders faced the starter (Mr A. Holmes), and the limit men, L. Johnstone and D. Heenan, set off at 2.55 p.m. These two riders were followed at various intervals until C. Preen, the virtual scratch man, left 12£min later. L. Johnstone left his co-marker on Saddle Hill, and was riding well. At the Coach and Horses J. Brown and Wills, off 7min, picked up' F. Beale, and this bunch was riding well, picking up Cannon at Scroggs's Hill. Dalzell and B Brown were picked up about a mile further on. This bunch set a solid pace, and it looked as though the winner would come from it. Paul picked up Heenan at East Taieri. and they teamed well Until Otokia, where Paul set out oh his own after L. Johnstone. At Hehley L. Johnstone was unfortunate in hitting a horse on the road, thus losing a good and suffering a severe shaking. However, he left on the homeward journey Imin ahead of M. Paul, who was followed 2|min later by J. Brown, B. Brown, and Wills, who in turn were Jmin ahead of Heenan, with Kennedy, Johnstone, Beale, and Cannon a further lsmin back. On the homeward journey J. Brown and Wills dropped B. Brown at Otokia, and setting a fast pace gradually picked up ihe remainder of the field. At Scroggs's Hill J. Brown withdrew. Wills rode on to the finish On his own, and won easily by Imin 39sec from G. O. Johnstone, who just defeated M. Paul in a good sprint for second place. Following are the official placings:— A. C. E.
