CAVERSHAM RATEPAYERS

ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of'the Caversham Ratepayers and Householders' Association was held last evening. Mr H. H. Milne presided. The chairman, in extending a welcome to Messrs J. Wilson and F. Wilkinson (members of the City Council), said it was to, be regretted that the attendance was so small. It was a pity that the residents did not take more in the affairs of the district. The chairman invited Crs Wilkinson and Wilson to speak on the work which the City Council proposed to carry out in the district. Cr Wilkinson said it was indeed very pleasing to know that those who controlled the association had devoted their spare time to improving the amenities of the district. He knew from past experience that the moral and financial support received from the residents was not encouraging. It was satisfactory to know, however, that the efforts of the association had not been in vain. As regards the carrying out of important works by the City Council, it had to be borne in mind that those parts of the city which most needed improvements had to receive first claim. He realised that the tar sealing of the Valley road was a very urgent work. An allocation had been made by the: City Council for this work, and it was hoped that it would be started in ihe near future'. When the work was completed the road would be one of the most important thoroughfares leading to and from the city. He was pleased to know, that the association had drawn attention to Riselaw road, which had been greatly improved. He congratulated the association on the good work it had accomplished during the year, and said he hoped the coming year would be just as successful in so far as improvements in the district were concerned, i ■

In answer to a question, Cr Wilkinson said the tar-sealing of David streetj had 'been placed on the allocations by the City Council. This was an important work, as the traffic through the street was always heavy. Cr Wilson spoke in connection with the extension of the tram line through Burns street. He described this as a necessary work, and said he would support tlie project. He thought it would be carried out by the City Council when funds were available. The question of shifting the sewer, had been a stumbling block to the extension of the tram service to Lookout Point, but he would continue to support this proposal. Such an extension of the tram. line was preferable to the running of a bus service. Cr Wilson said there had been much criticism in connection with the council's employing relief workers, but the Main South road provided one example of the ■ profitable use of unemployed labour. Had it not been for unemployed labour, many years might have passed before the Main South road would have received such profitable attention./ •:• y n ■ , Crs Wilkinson and Wilson answered a number of questions dealing with proposed works in the district. . . ..,
