Captain Bassum, of the Dutch ship Sianter, is shocked to find that ntfbody wants, the authentic sea serpent he found in Java Bay, and has been offering to every aquarium at the ports between Java and Naples. The serpent is nearly 4ft lons, and it looks very much like the land variety of serpents, except that it has fins. Since it was caught it has lived in a tank all to itself, in which Captain Bassum kept the water between 82 and 88 degrees Fahrenheit. “ Everybody has been interested in it; but nobody wants it.” Captain Bassum said ruefully. “And to think that for years learned men have argued about whether sea serpents exist or not, and now they have got it alive they won’t take it.” The expense of providing it with the proper food seems to be the main reason for rejecting this rare, if not unique, specimen.
