RADIO ACTIVITY FROM WATER

TO THE EDITOR, Sir,- —Referring to » letter-by “ Sarcoma” in Wednesday’s Daily Times 1 tried experiments on two known water suppliers in Dunedin. The first was Thomson’s aerated water factory bore, and the other the flowing artesian in Maitland streets The results, with recard to the former, were:—Depth on footpath, outside the factory, 201 ft; relative quantity, 66 yards; relative quality, 64 yards. Respecting the latter:—Depth known, but unimportant for our purposes; relative quantity, 14 yards; relative quality, two yards. For those who do not understand what I mean by relative quantity and quality, it may be explained that the diviner works these off by measurement. In these two cases . the relative wholesomeness of the water is as 64 to 2. In looking for the reason of the poor quality at Maitland street I find the water is coming off a certain mineral which I would not have thought would be harmful, but I found also that this mineral was carbonaceous. Perhaps our mineralogists can explain the effect of the carbon. —I am, etc., George Livingston.
