CONCILIATION COUNCIL

FREEZING WORKS DISPUTE FAILURE TO REACH AGREEMENT A sitting of the Conciliation Council was held yesterday before Mr S. Ritchie, commissioner, to consider an application on behalf of the employers under the Otago and Southland Freezing Wprka industry award. The employers were represented by Messrs A. Derbie (Invercargill), G. M. Corbett (Invercargill), S. Dickson (Christchurch), and D. P. Garrick (Christchurch), and the employees by Messrs R. S. Tait (Southland), D. O’Brien (Mataura), W. E. Sill (Auckland), and J. A. Milburn (Burnside). The employers submitted considerable reductions in wages compared with rates hitherto" paid, and asked for numerous alterations in the existing conditions upder which the industry is carried on. After a general talk over the table for, about two hours, when many details pertaining to the industry were debated, Mr Sill moved, and Mr O’Brien seconded: “ That the dispute be referred to the Arbitration Court for settlement.” The motion was lost. The commissioner then asked for a vote on th 6 question of a further adjournment. A motion was, put to the meeting accordingly, and was lost.. The inquiry ended without any settlement being arrived at. The commissioner explained to the press that the position now is that notification will be sent to the clerk of awards that no settlement was reached, and 30 days after the notification the award will be automatically cancelled. < . . •
