LAND SETTLEMENT
THE GALATEA ESTATE GOVERNMENT’S CAUTIOUS POLICY. (Per United Press Association:) ROTORUA, July 6. Sir Apirana Ngata performed the ceremony of opening the road from Te Teko to the Galatea estate to-day in the presence of a large gathering of town and country residents. , . , „ Referring to the criticism of the Government over the delay in throwing open the Galatea estate the Minister said that the department was being guided by the experience gained in previous land settlement schemes. In tackling the pumice country the Government had considered the views of scientists who had stated that volcanic ash showers mad formed the land, which was subject to bush sickness. Galatea was on the border of the ash showers, and the Government there- ; fore wanted to make sure that thews was no possibility of the land being bush sick before the settlers took over the farms.
