TAIERI RIVER TRUST

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Taieri River Trust was held yesterday, Mr T. M. Ball presiding. Messrs R. T. Sadd, R. A. Kempshell. A. Moore, J. M'Kenzie, G. Lyall were present. REPORTS. The inspector reported as follows for the month:—The following drains had been 1 finished: —Cuttance’s (22 chains), the drain from Henley road to school (36 chains), Reid’s (20 chains), and Taylor’s (31 chains). The grass had been cleaned from the drain Loch Ascog-Lee Creek. The river bank had been repaired at Otokia and at Blair’s, Outram. "Marshall's gang had cleared Lee Creek from Otokia road to Harvey’s. Loch Katrine drain, from Duck Creek to Nicol’s, had been deepened; The Berwick River was scouring its banks badly since the renewal of the willows—there were several places where the stop banks would have to be shifted back if not protected immediately. —Received. The Works Committee detailed the visit of inspection and the many matters that had come under its notice. The report was adopted. It was decided that the report in future be sent to the clerk before the Thursday prior to the meeting, so that members could peruse it before the meeting day. It was decided to write to the Dunedin City Council pointing out the urgency for attending to the scouring of the stop "banks on the trust’s side of the Waipori River. CORRESPONDENCE The town clerk, Dunedin, answered the trust’s request for a bus load of unemployed. The council’s Public Works 1 Committee had granted the request provided full cost of. transport would, he paid by the trust.—Noted, inquiries to be made if farmers could absorb this labour The town clerk. Dunedin, wrote regarding control of water in the dam at Waipori.—As the trust did not know the views of the interested settlers, members preferred not to express an opinion on the matter. Several letters were received with regard to payment of outstanding rates. — Regarding rates outstanding for the year ended 1930, it was decided to inform the writers that the trust had no powers to remit the 10 per cent, penalty. In connection with two letters concerning the present ye°ar’s rates, terms were drawn up by the trust re the 10 per cent penalty. The Perpetual Trustees Estate and Agency Company, Ltd., wrote regarding the estate of A. F. Doull, asking that the drain _on the east side of his property be defined, and inquiring what the estate’s share of cost of unemployed labour for drain-cleaning would be.—The writers to he notified that the . drain would be cleaned. On the receipt of £5 towards cost, the other application would be granted. John Miller, Maungatua, wrote in connection with the trust’s promise to lower the box on the Lee Creek road at his property.—Mr Miller to be informed that the work tvould be undertaken within a fortnight. John, Campbell, Momona, wrote regarding Loch Katrine drain.—Deferred till next meeting.

Ford Bros., Momona, asked that pipes be lowered carrying their drainage under the Allanton-Momona road. —To be attended to as.soon as men were available. Messrs Sievwright, James and Nichol wrote regarding a client’s unpaid rates. — Left in the secretary’s hands. The same firm wrote regarding Marshall’s bank.— No further action to be taken.

J. H. Anderson, Outram, sought a reduction in rental. —The request was declined.

The Commissioner of Unemployment notified the trust that the insurance companies had decided on a flat rate of 25s per centum for relief workers’ insurance. —Noted. GENERAL.

The estimates for current year were approved, and the customary motion giving notice of rates was tabled;—An administrative. rate of fid per, acre, being a reduction of Id, and drainage rate of 3s per acre, being a reduction of 3d per acre. It would have been possible to effect a greater reduction, only the trust was expending a considerable sum in the employment of relief workers. The chairman’s ■ action in allowing relief workers to cease half an hour earlier in July was endorsed.
