UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ PAPER

EDITOR'S PENALTY MITIGATED A special meeting of the University Council was held yesterday afternoon to consider further the action previously taken by the council in relation to the editor of the Critic. There were present the chancellor (Sir Thomas Sidey), the vice-chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell), Sir James Allen, Sir Liudo Ferguson, Dr J. K. H. Inglis, Dr Marshall Macdonald, Messrs J. C. Stephens, L. D. Ritchie. J. Rennie, G. R. Ritchie, J. W. Dove, J Wallace, J. A. Moore, F. W. Mitchell and C. M. Gilray. The meeting was not open to the press, and after a discussion the following resolution was conveyed to us for publication : “ That while satisfied that the sentence, imposed upon the editor of the Critic at a meeting held on May 20 was in no wily excessive, yet in view of the full and complete apology tendered by him in a letter received on June 6 and the. contrition expressed therein', and taking into consideration his previous good record at the University, the council resolves to mitigate the penalty previously imposed on him. “ The council now resolves to reprimand him severely for the insertion in the Critic of the articles complained of; to exclude him from the University of Otago and its precincts until October 31; and to require him to take his future clinical training as from June 30 at some other centre than Dunedin.” The effect of this resolution is taat the editor of the Critic, who is a sruthycar medical student, will be able to complete his course this year.
