MANY BURNED ALIVE
ATROCITIES IN LIBERIA APPEAL TO LEAGUE OF NATIONS GENEVA, May IS. The killing and burning alive of men, women, and children and the firing of 44 villages are among the charges against the Liberian authorities made by a Liberian delegation, which asserted that measures were necessary to maintain order. Eighty-one men, 49 women, and 29 children are known to have been massacred. It is believed that many were burned alive. The committee which is dealing with Liberian affairs resolved urgently to recommend the League Council to send a representative to the coast to assist in the pacification of the country and encourage the tribes to return to their villages under conditions of security. > ■ Liberia is an independent negro republic in Western Africa. It was founded by the American Colonisation Society in 1820, and has been recognised since 1847 as an independent State, There have been grave complaints of the operations of slavery in the State, and a commission under the. auspices of the league which visited Liberia found that many of the allegations were true.
