FIRST DAY’S RESULTS LITTLE DOUBT WINS CHIEF EVENT. f (Per United Press Association.) WANGANUI, May 12. The Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting was opened under adverse conditions, rain commencing after the first race and falling steadily all day. The attendance was good under the circumstances. The track became, very heavy. The totalisator handled £5896, against £11,126 10s last year. Results: — RATA HACK HURDLES HANDICAP, Of 75sovs. One mile four furlongs and aquarter. S—CALLAPAT, 10.1 (W. Grindlay) .. 1 4—BON EVE 9.3 (R. Miles) 2 1— BALLOON, 10.5 (W. Bowden) .. 3 Also started: 2 Fernden 9.12, 7 Royal Mint 9.8, 6 Banbridge 9.7, 3 Henry of Naverre, 10 Clopton 9.3, 9 The Sun, 8 Pass On 9.0. Pass On made all the early running, but Callapat took the lead five furlongs from home, and held off Bon Eve and Balloon. Fernden was fourth. Slump assumed the lead after clearing the first obstacle, being followed after a mile by Democratic, Princess Elizabeth, Jen, Just an Idea, and Airtight. At the last fence Slump fell, leaving Princess Elizabeth to go on and win. Freehold made a bad jump at the second last fence, but had too much pace for Jen, Airtight, and Just an Idea, who .were the next to finish. Capetown, Little Doubt, Havering, Mount Shannon, and High Falutin’ were early - prominent, but Little Doubt asserted himself in the straight. High Falutin’ and Richfield finished well.
