PALMERSTON NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, May 12
After a fine spell, the weather broke on Tuesday evening, and heavy rain fell continuously until late last night. The Shag River rose very quickly, washing away all the plank crossings, and yesterday afternoon was running bank to bank.
The river, at one part of the flood, was flowing over the bridge at Ross’s crossing, and washed portion of the approaches away, making it impossible to cross. The approaches have since, however, been temporarily repaired, and a safe crossing can now be effected. Owing to parte of the road being washed away, the White Star bus from Central Otago was unable to get through last night, but reached Palmerston this morning. VALEDICTORY. On Tuesday evening members of the Men’s and Ladies’ Bowling Clubs gathered in their pavilion to bid farewell to Mr M'Rae, green supervisor and one of the vice-presidents of the Men’s Club, 'on hie departure to take up sheep-farming at Miller’s Flat. Before the presentation was made to him of a handsome travelling rug, various speakers expressed their regret at losing Mr M'Rae from the district, and wished him the best of success in his new home.
