ACTIVITIES OF THE DISTRICT.

POPULAR TEACHER Holiday feeling was tinged with sadness at the Oamaru North School on the last day of the term, when the teachers and pupils met to bid farewell to Miss Ivy King, who for four and a-half years had been a popular and successful teacher. The headmaster (Mr Judkins), who had with him several members of the committee, spoke of Miss King’s capable and untiring work for her classes. Members of the School Committee also voiced their appreciation A little pupil, Trixie Ball, presented Miss King with a beautiful bouquet of chrysanthemums, while Fairlie Miller and Esther Familton made a presentation of a handsome xylonite toilet set to Miss King, with many good wishes from her pupils. Ringing cheers were given for Miss King as the school dismissed.

Subsequently the staff entertained Miss King at afternoon tea. Eulogistic references were again made to Miss King’s popularity, and Mr Judkins, on behalf of the staff, presented the guest of honour with an electric reading lamp and a beautiful volume of Millais’ paintings. Miss King suitably acknowledged the gifts, and stated that her stay in Oamaru nad been most enjoyable and inspiring, and Temuka being her home town was the only reason for her leaving the Oamaru North School, where her work, had always been most congenial. MANCHESTER UNITY N.G. Bro. Norman T. Jenkin presided oyer a well-attended meeting of the Juvenile Lodge, Manchester Unity. ANGLING CLUB A meeting of the committee of the North Otago Angling Club was held last night. Mr W. Aitken presided. The receipt of booklets on trout fishing from the Acclimatisation Society was acknowledged with thanks. Accounts totalling £1 12s 6d were passed for payment. A general meeting of members was held subsequently, when members were urged to attend the annual meeting of the Acclimatisation Society. It was decided to hold over the second casting competition till just prior to the next fishing season. Mr S. Pile urged members to forward trout scales to the Research Committee, which sent out good advice to the societies. A social committee, comprising Messrs Aitken, Gbodall, Edwards,’ and Pile, was set up to attend to the social side of the club’s activities. MANCHESTER UNITY The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Oamaru Lodge was held last pight. P.G. Bro. Gregor, acting as N.G. in the absence of Bro. Jones, presided over a large attendance of officers and brethren. Three candidates 'were elected and duly initiated into the Order, an impressive ceremony being carried out by the various officers. The United Friendly Societies' Dispensary issued an appeal to members, and Warden Bro. J. Christie, Bro. Holland, Bro. Weir, and P.G. Bro. Gregory reported on sick members. Sister M. Jenkins responded to the toast of the visitors, on behalf of the Loyal Star of the North Lodge It was decided that the next lodge night should be a card evening, married versus single.
