- RUGBY. The Rugby season will be opened this afternoon, and two very interesting games will be played at Carisbrook. Most of last year’s players aro back, and they have several new players who should prove an acquisition to the side. The Pirates and their supporters are • confident that the Blacks will prove a tough proposition for the teams they meet. Alhambra and Dunedin will meet at Tahuna Park, and there are prospects of a good game at Mosgiel between Kaikorai and Taieri. At the North Ground Union will meet Zingan. Ground members’ tickets arc now available, and can be had on application to the secretary of the union. RUGBY LEAGUE. The Rugby League competitions will commence to-day, when two senior matches will be played. Interest, of course, will be centred in the fact that for the first time a match will be played on the Rugby League’s new ground, known as the Speedway. The teams in this match will be Christian Brothers and Athletic. The playing area is in excellent order, and the seating a'Coramodation is excellent. The other two .teams, City and Pacific, will meet at the Oval. ASSOCIATION. The second round of matches in the Fletcher Cup competition should give spectators some interesting games, the principal one being the meeting of Mosgiel and Seacliff at Logan Park this afternoon. Both sides include players who were members of the Otago representative team which was successful in winning the F.A. trophy last season—the blue riband of Dominion “soccer”—and have had their ranks considerably strengthened by the inclusion of new players. The one charge gives admission to the stand. The other matches are Old Boys v. Northern, at the Gardens; Port v. Maori Hill, at Prospect Park; and Mornington v. Technical, on the Oval.
