TROTTING

By Sentinel.

Three Derby winners in Wrackler, Arethusa, and Giro will go under the hammer at Mr H. F. Nicoll’s sale. They captured Jour classics. ■ J. S. Shaw has now a team of 10 in hand, and it may be taken for granted that time and money do not permit duffers to be kept in training. When Red Shadow did a work-out over two miles at Addington on Saturday last jn company with Ayrmont Chimes and Hollo they went the first mile in 2min 20sec and the last in 2min 4 4-ssec. A donation of a canteen of cutlery hag been received by the Auckland Trotting Club, and will go to the owner of the winner of the Prince of Wales Handicap, the chief _ event to be decided at the winter meeting of the club. The committee of the Auckland Trotting Club has decided that the Great Northern

Derby of 1933 will have a stake of £350, of which the second horse will receive £65, third f3Q, and the breeder of the winner, provided the horse was foaled in New Zealand, £25. The fact that the Forbury Park meetings have been generally a loss has compelled the committee to reduce the stakes in connection with the winter meeting. The prize-list, however, still shows the value of races extending from lOOsovs to 275sovs, and no doubt as soon as the meetings start to pay their way again the stakes will commence to improve in value. J. Bryce had three of his two-year-olds at Addington on Saturday, and they attracted a good deal of _ attention. The most forward of the trio is by Matchlight from Jenny Lind Junior, by Goldstream Bells, from Jenny Lind. The others are a brother to Rawhitiroa, by Rey de Oro, from, Bright Alice, and a colt by Matchlight from Marge Pointer. They are three very promising youngSt Yn ’ Prince Roydon and Taxpayer, Mr J, R. M'Kenzie has two worthy representatives by his old champion Great Bingen, to do battle for Roydon Lodge, in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, and the Yaldhurst owner may yet own a winner of the two-year-old classic. Mr M'Kenzie had these youngsters educated as yearlings and after they had shown great speed over a couple of furlongs, he retired them to the paddock to give them a chance to develop. Judging by their recent display at Addington (says the Press) the early training seems to have had no ill effects upon either juvenile. Ahuriri, who is to be offered for sale at the Addington Show Grounds on Tuesday of next week, was a great racehorse, and included in his victories were the New Zealand Cup twice, the Auckland Cup, and New Zealand Sapling Stakes. But for an accident early in his three-year-old career, he would probably have added the Great Northern and New Zealand Derbies to the list. His sire, Cathedral Chimes, won both the Auckland and New Zealand Cups, while his dam, Muricata, was one of the best trotters of her day in New Zealand. A query by a correspondent; as to whether Erin’s Advance established a race record when she won the principal race at Wyndham prompted “Faugh-a-ballagh ” to delve into the records .of past meetings of the Wyndham Trotting Club and the rather remarkable position was disclosed that track records were broken ,in nearly every race but one, the exception being the mile saddle race._ The mile record is 2min 15 2-ssec, established by Nelson’s Victory in 1930, and Wednesday’s winner, Willow Wave, did 2min, 16 2-ssec, but the latter won easing up and had there been anything capable of extending him at the finish he would have clipped at least two seconds off his time. Erin’s Advance beat the two mile record by 1 3-ssec, the previous best time standing to Revolt, who went 4min 39 4-ssec in 1928. The following is a comparative table showing, the old and new records: —

The respective record-holders are:— Mocast (Novice), Keen Derby (Ferry), Erin’s Advance (Trotting Club Handicap), Blue Mountain (Edendale), Gladsome Audubon (Menzies), Dusky (President’s), Probationer (Final). Erin’s Chief, who dead-heated with Dusky in the President’s, also improved on the previous record. Dusky, however, did the fastest time and ia entitled to the honours.
