SOUTH OTAGO
(From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, March 22. The weather for the past few days has been extremely warm. Yesterday the maximum temperature in the sun was 99.5 degrees, and in the shade 80 degrees. This is considered to be the hottest day this year so far as this locality is concerned. To-day the temperature appears equally high. BALL AND PRESENTATION. The annual ball of the nursing staff of Balclutha Hospital, held last night in the Britanna Theatre, drew an attendance of 100 couples, notwithstanding the fact that the weather was too warm for danc-. ing. During; an interval the presentation of a travelling rug from the staff was made to the matron of the hospital (Nurse Shepherd), who will leave shortly to take up a responsible position at the Waipiata Sanatorium. Mr P. Waite replied on behalf of the recipient, and eulogising Nurse Shepherd's work. His remarks were endorsed by Dr Radcliffe, and a happy function was concluded with the singing of "Auld Lapg Syne."
