THE SETTLEMENT OF OTAGO
EIGHTY-FOURTH ANNIVERSARY SURVIVORS OF THE EARLY SETTLERS During the past 12 months one death only was recorded amongst the persons who arrived in Otago in 1848, the first year of the settlement. The John Wickliffe brought 97 passengers,'the Philip Laing 247, and the Blundell 152. Of the total of 496 who arrived in these three vessels there are only the following ten survivors: JOHN WICKLIFFE. Arrived at Port Chalmers on March 23, 1848. Mrs GRIFFITHS (Elizabeth Mosley), Balclutha, PHILIP LAING. Arrived at Port Chalmers on April 16, 1848. Mrs WILLIAM ALLAN (Marion Seaton), Dunedin. Mrs J. L. SOUTER (Marion Duff), Sydney, THOMAS M‘KAY. Wingatui. WALTER WATSON, Invercargill. Mrs M. STEWART (nee Sinclair), Papakura, Auckland. BLUNDELL. Arrived at Port Chalmers on September 21, 1848. J. A. D. ADAMS, Western Australia. Miss ELIZABETH SOMERVILLE, Rangiatea. Mrs FRASER (Ann Black), Timaru. JOHN JOHNSTON, Wellington.
