SMALLPOX IN AMERICA

NIAGARA CAREFULLY INSPECTED . A CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH. (Pek United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, March 21. Owing to the recent outbreak of smallpox cases at Vancouver the medical inspection of the passengers and crew of the Niagara was more careful than usual when the vessel dropped anchor in the stream this morning. There were no developments, however, and the ship was granted practique. The ship’s surgeon, Dr O’Neill, said the epidemic had come from America. There had been cases in Los Angeles and San Francisco before any had been heard of in Vancouver. It was a bad type, deaths having occurred in the Canadian city. Vaccination clinics had been opened in Vancouver, both by the Department of Health and by private medical men, and these were being patronised freely. Dr O’Neill thought that the authorities had the situation' well in hand.
