AWARDS FOR BRAVERY

ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY BALCLUTHA GIRLS HONOURED. fPeb Dmted Press Associatios.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 21. Several awards for bravery were made to-day by the court of directors of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand. The bronze medal was awarded to Captain W. I. Morgan, master of the tug Robey, Wellington, for attempting to rescue a man from drowning after the wreck of the Progress on May 1, 1931. Bronze medals were also awarded to Joyce and Shoua Lyon, of Balclutha. aged 15 and 14 years respectively, who beat off an infuriated ball which attacked their father. Certificates were awarded to L._ M. Stephenson (New Plymouth) and G. Williams and N. Crighton,. seamen on the Opihi, for rescuing two men from Paritutu Rock, New Plymouth, on June 14, 1931. Certificates were also awarded to Louis Cecil, aged 46, of Auckland, for rescuing three girls from drowning at Henderson on January 4, and to John Frederick Graham Freeman, aged 70, of Westport, for rescuing a girl from drowning on January 8. Bronze medals were awarded to Puton, Henry, and Etehe; certificates to J. D. Campbell and Fred Rennie Maretu; and letters of commendation to Ria Atiu and. Makea Tinirau, residents of Raratonga, who played various parts in the rescue of fishermen in a storm near the island.
