RIFLE SHOOTING

TIMARU DEFENCE CLUB. On Saturday afternoon the Tiraaru Defence Rifle Club fired the final match of the championship, the H. Pateman Match, 10 shots at 800 yards and 10 at 900 yards, to be added to the championship scores. The day was fine with a fairly strong mirage from the sea, and the shooting was good, though some of the closeup marksman had mishaps which altered their positions in the championship. At 800 yards Rifleman W. Bradshaw, who was third in the championship, scored the possible. Riflemen M. and J. Healy (father and sou) scored 49 each. At 900 yards Vice-president W. E. Jones, Riflemen M. Healy and C. Paine each got 47, which were the highest.

The Pateman Match was won by Rifleman M. Healy with 96, counting out Rifleman W, Bradshaw. Bradshaw received the second prize. Vice-president W. E. Jones was third with 95. The championship was the chief attraction of the day. W. E. Jones, who was in the lead at the start of the match, finished with 48 and 47—95, making him 1062 and the winner. Rifleman C. Blackwood, who had been running second, was six points ahead of Rifleman W. Bradshaw, but at 800 yards Bradshaw scored the possible and Blackwood got 47, this giving Blackwood a lead of only three points. At 900 yards Blackwood fired first and made 43. Bradshaw had to make 46 to tie with him for second place, which he did, and second place will have to be shot off. Mr Duncan, president of the club, read out the positions of the championship at the conclusion of the shoot, and congratulated the winner, Vicepresident W. E. Jones. Mr Jones suitably replied. He said he had won the championship some six times and this was the hardest one he had had to face. The following are the day’s scores: — H. PATEMAN MATCH.

Weather conditions were fine, but a glaring light and choppy breeze were difficult to contend with. Several good scores were registered, notably by Rifleman J. M'Knight (31 at 300 yards), Rifleman A. Dippie (34 at 500 yards), and Rifleman W. Harty (41 at 600 yards). Rifleman O. G. Miller headed the day’s aggregate with 92. The following are the highest scores:—

Frazer, with a good 34, was top scorer. J. Mackie (32) and W. Oliver (31) also shot well. At 500 yards, R. M'Crostie and J. H. Frazer each scored 33, closely followed by W. Crowe and M.
