MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Waihemo County Council was held at Palmerston yesterday, there being present Cr& E v L. Smith (chairman), G-. Clark, W. Ritchie, A. Purvis, H. S, Sheat, J. O’Connell, and J. Craig, CORRESPONDENCE. The Minister of Public Works (Mr J. G. Coates) advised that the financial poeition . necessitated a review _of all road authorities held by local bodies. All such authorities held by the council were therefore being cancelled, but where contracts had been let or definite commitments made the Government would consider issuing fresh authorities for these works only.—Received. The Golden Point Gold and Scheehte Company drew the council’s attention to the state of the road between Macrae’s and the mine, and asked that, if possible, the grader be sent to regrade tbe surface.—Crs O’Connell and _ Clark were authorised to put the work in hand. It was decided to advise the Otago Eleotrie Power Board that the council could not nee its way clear to accept a smaller commission than 5 per cent, for collecting the board’s rates in the county. The district engineer, Public Works Department, advised that the Minister of Public Works was not agreeable to any assistance being provided to _ carry out work for flood damage.—Received. The Waitemata County Council wrote in connection with the appeal case with reference to the removal of power poles on county roads, and asked for assistance > towards the cost of the appeal, which dealt with a matter vitally affecting all counties. —It was decided to forward a donation of £1 Is. It was decided that the 10 per cent, penalty for overdue Electric Power Board rates be not imposed until June 30. The Maniototo County engineer advised that repairs to Allen’s bridge at Rock and Pillar had been completed at a cost of £2O, and that the council’s quota was £lO.—lt was decided to authorise the payment of the council’s quota. It was decided to call tenders for 150 yards of gravel for the Mareburn road, 150 yards of schist rock for the Nenthorn road, and 180 yards of gravel for the Stoneburn road.

The county inspector reported that the main highway bridge at Sweetwater was in urgent need of redecking, a lot of the wood having rotted away.—lt was decided that steps be taken to repair the bridge. Accounts amounting to £528 7s 9d were passed for payment.
